I know some people on here have bearded dragons and I'd like some kind of a crash course.
I'm considering getting one after summer when i move into an apartment with my girlfriend. As far as I understand it'll cost me about 200-300 pounds to get set up with the liz, tank and lights.
A few questions:
How fast do they grow? I want to get one from when it's small, but it'd be nice if it grows at a somewhat steady rate.
What do they need to be fed? Is it a big effort to get special foods or is it available "anywhere"?
I feel a bit bad about having the dragon in a cage 24/7. Even the 120 gallon tanks seem small for it to live in, but I won't have space for anything bigger. Is it ok for them to run around the flat (when observed) or are they too sensitive?
Anything else I should know I'd appreciate

What do they need to be fed? crickets when small locusts when bigger. Is it a big effort to get special foods or is it available "anywhere"? Anywhere you buy the viv from should be able to supply the food
I feel a bit bad about having the dragon in a cage 24/7. Even the 120 gallon tanks seem small for it to live in, but I won't have space for anything bigger. Is it ok for them to run around the flat (when observed) or are they too sensitive? You can let them run around if you want but they can be quick and tricky to catch, handling them is a good idea though.

You don't need a crash course if your not getting it until the summer you got plenty of time to read up on them lol, Firstly I wouldn't spend that sort of money setting up I bought a lockable tv/video unit of ebay for a tenner and converted it into a viv with lights thermostat decoration etc for under £100 alternatively buy secondhand and get it all set up and temps sorted a week or 2 before you get the dragon. What do they need to be fed? Is it a big effort to get special foods or is it available "anywhere"? There are lots of place to get your food I ordered most of mine from the internet to start as it was much cheaper but now I breed my own roaches and mealworms for them (saves me a fortune)

They can run around fine when supervised, never had a problem with any of mine being difficult to get back into there viv's, make sure there are no small objects around cos they try and eat everything and don't keep them out for to long as they can get cold.

They can cost a lot to feed and use a fair bit of electricity for lighting heat etc, don't listen to any advice for the petshop unless it's backed up by stuff you've read, most of them haven't got a clue, when they shit it smells worse than anything you've every smelt before.

Also, don't just limit your choices to beardies, there are plenty of others that are easy to keep! Skinks are mostly easy for example.

I'd really like to get an iguana but they're just too big... I've heard they can grow up to 6 feet. That's longer than me 
I don't know why I hadn't considered second hand sets. That would surely save a lot of dosh, and as long as it's cleaned out nicely it's fine.
I agree I don't really need to know everything now, but when I get excited about something I want to know stuff right away 
If you let them walk around the flat do they shit everywhere like a rabbit or do they stick to their own area like a cat? |

I used to have a beardie when I was living with an ex about 2years ago.
He grew to around 2foot, in less than a year  but he was handled everyday. He used to cling on my back and go to the shops with me, or equally shit on my mals back and go round the field.
We used to keep him in a 6 x 3 x 3. With just some sand and a bit of log for him to hide under. This was mainly due to him always been out of it and walking going round the village. We did make 1 trip on the bike but the missus nearly killed me so I never tried it again.
P.s. Never ever ever ever, drop a box of small crickets in the tank, because they will all be gone before you can blink. Babies are bloody quick and bloody hungry.
