Rear Brake Caliper Help

Hi,

I ride a 2001 sv650 and last week the rear brake was not binding - on closer inspection it seems the pistons had pushed through the brake shoes and the brake discs had started to sheer down the pistons.

I'm not a mechanic by any means but do like to tinker Very Happy

- so (with the help of the search function on BCF) I thought I'd give a caliper overhaul a go.

Ordered some new pistons and seals and new banjo bolt washers - and went to work - two days later and now all back on the bike and working great apart from the rear being slighty spongy - I have beld twice now and left the rear brake pushed down overnight - still no joy.

Anyone any ideas?

How is your bleeding technique?.

I usually on the brakes, pump 5-6 times then undo the banjo bolt (which has a tube submerged in a fairly deep cup of brake fluid.

you can also give the caliper a shake.

tap the whole thing with the handle of a screw driver or similar, i often find this knocks the last few bubbles loose.

Furthurmore it may just be rubber hoses and youve not realised how bad they are!

Thanks all - was going to take a photo of the piston but didn't think anyone would be interested so they went in the bin.

Got new pads and have ordered a new brake disc to fit next week - will try and bleed again and give the caliper a knock or two aswell (after I've fitted the new brake disc)

Do you mean you ate through the pad material, the backing plate and then into the piston!!

I think you are lucky you didn't have an accident!

Still you will hopefully learn this time and make sure to check the state of ones brakes.

Hi

I assume the SV uses the standard nightmare Suzuki quick seize calipers.

If so have you been bleeding the caliper using both bleed nippes or just 1? If only one then there will be a load of air trapped on the other side of the caliper.
