Distilling Alcohol

Would it be considered alky tax evasion to distill say cheapo vodka to produce a stronger beverage?

The vodka you buy has obviously had the UK duty paid on it so that "amount" of alcohol has been tax paid.

The distilling would obviously not magic up alcohol from nowhere, it would just concentrate it. :. the strong resultant alcohol you have is still covered from a tax point of view?

Just chuck it in the freezer .... its got to be ok legally, I was doing that in the 70's

Doing that will help concentrate the alcohol but you will not separate all of it from the water ice slush so you will loose some of your duty paid booze.
Why not just go the Irish route and produce your own potch?

What are you using the stuff for? If you consider that you need booze stronger than that available to a Moscow alcoholic you have a problem.

why on earth do you want it stronger? , in russia I encountered rocket fuel, yer supposed to mix it with water and concentrated vodka saves on transport costs but people drink that stuff neat.

You still trying to make tinctures? Or do you have some other reason for wanting it so strong?

EDIT: Anything over 40%abv won't freeze in a normal freezer, it just goes thick.

Bear in mind, its not really drinkable, it kinda disolves when it touches your mouth!!

You can "brew" as much alcoholic drink as you want in the UK, but it is illegal to distill liquor without a special licence from the government. It's also illegal to sell anything you've brewed/distilled at home.

That said, most homebrew shops (and websites) sell "water" distillers that also distill liquor, should some unscrupulous person decide to do such a thing.

I do a lot of home brewing (wine and beer), but given the cost of "water" distillers, I'd rather just buy spirits etc from the shops!

Why not just buy 100% ethanol and dilute it down?

I'm not sure how you go about getting this in the public domain, but it's fairly easy and abundant stuff to half inch from a laboratory lol.
