Bloody DVLA - License Question

I was going through my filing last night and moved my driving license from one folder to another, as I did so, I noticed that the date on the photocard part is out of date by a month! I believe this is to update the photo to a more recent one. Has anyone done this? Am I effectively driving without a license at the moment? Obviously I need to get this sent off immediately to get it updated but will the DVLA ask about the gap in dates?

I haven't had anything from the DVLA to let me know about this but I have moved house recently-ish (although my license was sent off to get the new address put on it), is there a form I will need to fill out? I guess I will have to send off a new photo with the license and probably an 8 page form in triplicate, knowing the DVLA.

I will also look into getting the license photo-copied and verified before I send it off.

However a DVLA spokesperson has said that a motorist's entitlement to drive will not be affected by failure to update the photo on the licence but it will invalidate their insurance. This is because with an out of date licence their entitlement to drive legally has ended, invalidating their car insurance, beware!!

That might be because around now is when the first generation of photocard driving licences are expiring, hence it is only starting.

There was a post mine I think which ended with an arguement with Bendy and drivers being elite or something, where somebody had his licence totally revoked as he left it for a long time.

Mine is only just over due, so I'll get it sent off tonight and pay the DVLA the £20 fee they want, even though I look no bloody different to the poxy tiny photo on my license. Arseholes.

Hi

Suspect that the insurance bit is just to frighten people. Think most insurance policies say something about having a licence or previously having a licence and not being disqualified from holding one.

Your licence is still valid (paper bit expires later on), but it is a different offence not to update the photo.

Yes, and it constitutes criminal fraud. But because it's a govt dept the law doesn't apply.

There have been countless revolutions where these kind of scum have been dragged out of their beds in the middle of the night and shot or hung from lamp-posts. This shit-hole country is long long overdue for it.

Normally I'd be the last to defend the DVLA...

But the new photocard and the rules pertaining to it has its basis in EU, not UK law.

Obviously the DVLA/Government didn't hold their hands up on our behalf and say 'no' right enough...

It would be funny if you sent them off the same photo to put on there..... How would they know? Bet they dont hold up the old and new licenses together to compare.

I renewed mine 2 weeks ago. I ticked the box to say I'd lost my previous license rather than having to send it back, just in case anything goes wrong.

I was thinking that too, as the photo on my licence looks incredibly cool and I've never been able to replicate it since.

What I'd like to know is how they worked out which one's would run out first. You'd have thought it would be by age. But my housemates one has just expired and she is 5 years younger than me... Confused Mine expires towards the end of next year...

They last for 10 years so I guess she applied for a photocard one before you did. It says on the front of the plastic bit when it is due to run out.

My licence is valid untill 2055 yet dvla decided i need to pay for a new one every few years (piss takers), even though my photo is still the one from my provisional at 17 (now 24), i have had loads of replacements and never had to send a photo.

my grandad told me a while back that when he first got his licence way back when, that his licence fee would cover ALL updates to his licence, low and behold the government decided no one would remember that (or the proof no longer exists) and charged him anyway.

If you have had lots of licences make sure your plastic bit is for the right paper bit, many a time I have had people produce there licences only to find that they have the wrong paper bit to the plastic bit.
