I hate the wind...

Hey.

What alternative way is there to park my bike?
Baically the wind was seriously bad last night and i woke up this morning to see my bike on the other half of our garden, on its side.

God knows how long its been there..but theres like a fiver of petrol on the floor...

It was on its side stand...so basically is it better to leave it on the centre stand, or park it against a wall or something?

Glad it wasnt chained up if im honest..usually front wheel is chained to our big metal gate, cant imagine the damage had it been chained up Sad

I feel your pain mate.

My old Ninja blew over on my front path when I lived in a small rented house with no driveway or garage. I found that my bikecover had acted as a sail (usually it's better to not have a bike cover on if the wind is gale force) but I decided to leave it there all night as I was sure it'd go over again anyway. Confused

After that I used heavy duty tent pegs and bungees acting as guy ropes on a tent, and secured the bike like that in bad winds.

gah mines on a path, with a like...half foot high brick wall, just so you seperate the path from the garden.
It managed to go over that... which is amazing with no bike cover, just plain naked in the wind Sad

I see you are also from Kent..the shit weather is just plain...shit!

UI have an alley way..perfect for the bike... BUT my dad owns a campervan, and the fucking box that goes on the top is down there..

I suppose if i can just park it backwards in there..just get rear wheel and seat in there it may help...But i dont really want the pain of lifting that bugger when your dad shouts its laying on its side.. that is one heavy bike when you just fly out of bed.. Sad

I'd think somewhere that shelters it from the worst of the wind would work best, but that guy rope\tent peg idea sounds decent, bit of hassle but it should work

If i had some grass or something i would definitely tent peg it.
Its just on concrete..amazing its got no scratches or dents!!
Will ride it to town later and see what if anything has been bent or twisted!

Luckily my drive way has walls that act as a nice wind break for me. Here on the sussex coast it's been soooooooooo windy today though!

Like, seriously my bike is just steering in to oncoming traffic for me, my CG is that light.

Just now walking along my road I saw a wheely bin picked up by the wind and thrown forcefully in to the road in front of a car Shocked

once they had stopped I moved it out of the way for them. They're very lucky it didn't get thrown right in to the side of them, there could have been glass everywhere.

Have a mooch about and look for some old mattresses/cushions and strap them to the sides of the bike today, and then cover with an old sheet and tie it on. That way if it goes over again, you will have done everything you can to protect anything that might break or scratch.

If there is a campervan on your drive, you should try and park next to it, use it as a wind protector. Or just for the next day or so, park it round a neighbours or a friend...you must know someone with a shed/garage you could bribe?

I live on the southcoast, and it's mental windy out there today...much like the 1987 winds!!!

Point the bike into the wind. Put it into 1st gear. Let the clutch lever out and push the bike forward until all slack is taken out of the drive train. Lean it onto the sidestand. Turn the hadlebars fully to the left.

This also works for parking pointing down hill on very steep slopes.

B. Beat the wind too it, just ride up engine off and drop.

3 of my bikes are left outside, 2 under 'sails' (covers when it's not windy). Never come outside to find either blown over.

The Superfour's unsheltered in the garden but on its centre stand - going to need a hurricane to take that down and I'd expect the cover will tear apart before the bike moves.

The 125's parked near the wall of the house, with the sidestand pointing towards the wall - wind's never going to blow it up over the sidestand and there's never going to be enough wind to blow it off the stand wall-side.

The DRZ's left uncovered in the front garden, stand facing towards the front of the house, but a good couple of metres from the wall. Stayed up right last night..

basically..
ive taken the bike out..its all straight and true, so im happy.
The "fix" is instead off parking it against the wind, so it can hit it side on...ive placed it sideways against our gate/front wall. Side stand makes bike lean away from wall,and ive wedged a long block of wood between the rear wheel and garage wall..so it cant actually fall either way.

Its in gear so it cant roll, i reckon if its lifted up in the air then yes..its gonna fall, but now..its great! Razz

There's certainly a stiff breeze today. I had to put a bit of wood under the sidestand when parking the old relic early as the weight in the top box would have seen it go over. I was alternating between almost getting blown on to the pavement and almost being blown into the path of oncoming cars. Then it started absolutely shatting it down with rain. It's very mild though. Unnaturally so for the middle of November Smile

left my honda outside last night and was still ok this morning on its main stand

our garden wall fell over last yeear in the wind

six foot high single brick on a three inch footing Shocked

i didnt buld it it was here when we got the house

now has a three foot fence with 6 foot godfathers in the ground

they are three foot high so three foot is underground

they aint moving nowere

I was more comfortable on my lighter XR today than I was on my DRZ last week - over Devil's Dyke at 8am in torrential rain and ridiculous winds straight off the coast were interesting. Feels like the wind is pushing me, rather than the bike - if the wheels get blown aside, it feels a lot easier to control - although some sportsbikes I've had were particularly worse in sidewinds than unfaired bikes...
