I was at the NEC for the classic car show and to say the least it was rather crowded. I went for a drink (£1.70 for a bottle of water ) whilst I was queueing the elderly chap in front of me ( you know the type, stressed out from the crowds and a bit doddery) pulled out his wallet to pay and dropped a twenty quid note. I of course told him and his old wrinkled face lit up with happiness.
Would you have given it back or disappeared sharpish to buy £20 of cable ties with your windfall?

I've done this before and handed it back. If I see the person thats dropped it then it'd be wrong to keep it IMO.

If not and it's just lying there it's fair game. If you don't take it someone else will!

I dont feel right takin people's money, gave it back for sure, i take tips at work because i'd feel awkward saying nooo i could never etc, they've offered it up, id feel like i was insulting them to turn it away.

I once saw a bloke drop a wallet with several notes stuffed in. It was bulging and the temptation was huge but gave it back.

He was probably loaded but even so.

In McDonalds once there was a £20 note on the floor and I casually stepped on it and waited. When no one was looking I knelt down and proceeded to upgrade my meal to large.

I once got undercharged for some beers in Scummerfield and realised as I was walking out. Being of an honest disposition I went back to the counter and told the girl (knowing how some shops dock wages when people make mistakes). Unfortunately the girl didn't even have the good grace to thank me!

Some time later, I bought two cases of beer on a 2-4-1 and when they rang it through the I only got charged for 4 cans (about £4.50 for 48 cans!).

Naturally remembering how grateful they were when I pointed out their previous error, my friends and I proceeded to purchase up as much of the stock as we could before they realised their mistake (by making sure we always combined our purchases with lots of food etc. we must've got away with about 15 cases before they noticed what was going on!).

When I was about 10, I saw a kid about the same age drop £5 under the table next to me. I casually threw a sweet on the floor towards the fiver. As I picked the sweet up, I picked up the fiver. He left, then returned after realising he had lost it, looked around for it and left with a sad face.

Hopefully I taught him a lesson to be careful with his money

To the OP, good on you for giving the money back, I've done the same in the past.

I once went to a cash machine where an old guy in front of me had withdrawn money and walked away without taking the cash (quite a lot, though I didn't stop to count). I took the money that was hanging out of the machine and went after him and gave it back. He just glared at me, then snatched the money and walked off. Ignorant prick

Something I’ve definitely learnt over my life is that doing good deeds/helping people with the expectation of the acts reciprocated or even in some cases thanks isn’t the right way to go about it.
A long time ago I realised that being disappointed when my efforts weren’t reciprocated, or even in some cases appreciated was my problem. Thus, in some cases I /will/ impose conditions when I offer help with some people, though these sort of people are those likely to ignore them anyway .
And, while it’s disappointing to help someone out and not even be thanked, did you do it just to for the thanks?
