Chain Adjustment

Does any one know how often you are suposed to adjust your chain, i seem to have to adjust mines about every week. The bike does get used daily. Is this normal, Just had to splash out for a new chain and sprocket as the chain can't be adjusted any more.

Difficult question. Variables include, type of bike, how you ride, what chain is on it, how well maintained the chain is, how old the chain is, how many miles you do per week. So it's not really possible to give an answer.
You should see an improvement with a nice new heavy duty chain. Thumbs Up

there are too many factors to be a be all and end all 'check chain now' time.. just keep an eye on it, if its loose then adjust it. simples

keep an eye on your new chain though.. new chains have an initial stretch once put on so you'll probably have to adjust it pretty soon, but after that it should settle down

I used to have to adjust my TDM's chain about once a fortnight. It was a cheap 'heavy duty' chain (they're all heavy duty if you go by what's on the box.)

If you splash out on a Gold DID (for example) you'll find it'll need adjusting a whole lot less. I did anyway.

More than anything, with chains, you get what you pay for.

I also used to adjust my chain almost weekly, I ride 80 miles each week day and the chain was dead by 15,000 miles.

I had a Suzuki OEM chain fitted in Feb and I fitted a Scottoiler a week later, I've adjusted the chain once in 14,000 miles at 4,000 miles and that was to slacken it off as it was a bit tight.

I know there are a lot of factors (torque, ham-fisted throttle abuse, engine type etc..) and you hear a lot of stuff about which chain and lubes are best, but personally I'll never ride without a Scottoiler again and I'll have an OEM chain when this one eventually wears out.
