After finishing a build at college today I thought a few people on the forum might fancy a gander..
From the 9th to the 13th it is our 'Colleges Week' and we have had a 'Pimp My Ride' event/ competition to showcase what we can do to some of the local media and business interests.

There will be no hint of the results of the build until it is unveiled as Virus is in one of the other groups participating and I want to see his dismay in person when we kick his groups ass. Wink

What I can do is show off the Base bike, A Honda XBR 500

https://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n243/MacKaliba/Photo002-3.jpg
https://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n243/MacKaliba/Photo003-1.jpg

...and provide one of the provisional designs that I knocked up, as well as this link so that you can follow it officially... Cheeky little glimpses.
We're Snetterton btw (Team 4).

Basically this is what we were looking at...
https://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n243/MacKaliba/xbrframe.jpg
Turning into something like this (Early draft, NOT representative of actual build).
https://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n243/MacKaliba/xbrframealt.jpg

Forum credits to BeatNck (who played our team coordinator and WinGuru) and Ironhead_Tom (Who is registered but not actually man enough to browse our mighty forum). Razz

We started on Monday, all of the participating groups gathered in the workshop to pick short straws and see what they came up with.
Second to last I was left to choose between the burgundy colored Honda thing that I'd managed to spy a few days before and a red 5 series Beemer shaped thing that was also covered... albeit poorly. Well not bad either way but I managed to bag the Honda which our group was hoping for.

https://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n243/MacKaliba/Photo005-1.jpg
https://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n243/MacKaliba/Photo006.jpg
A bit tatty yes, but this didn't deter us, a prime canvas we thought.
Note the Cossie RS wheel, oh yes, that is happening baby!

So we were then rushed out of the workshop as the first group got to work and we went up to the study center and started to come up with a plan of action.
Nick was playing boss man, our good friend Andy heading up the support and grafting workforce and I was put up as head of design.
Most of the groups have been choosing a certain theme, we originally wanted to go for a Poppy appeal theme but I decided it was way to easy to make that look corny and shit so decided we wouldn't dishonor the day of remembrance with such a potential heresy.
I decided that a fitting solution in this case was to use the actual college as a theme, complete with design references and vinyls.
More to come later on that...

We knew before we picked the straws that we were going to go down the chop route if we bagged a bike, no matter what type of bike it was and that in the interest of style points would sacrifice any practicality or realism in turn for a show stopper look.
I requested as a joke that we have a wide car wheel put on single sided arm, Which Nick insisted must be hard tailed... and Tom threw in a ridiculous Stretch and rake of the forks.

With 3 demanding engineering tasks already laid out we knew we were going to have our work cut out, there of course were allot more ideas brought to the table but with only seven and a half hours to complete the task we decided to focus our initial energies on these.

No more spoilers for now anyway, please check back I believe on Monday for the result. Thumbs Up

Ok, allow me to pick up the story...
By late morning we had this -
https://i349.photobucket.com/albums/q399/beatnck2/12112009299.jpg

While i worked on the rear end a couple of others made up some rigid forks and raked out the front end, which then gave us this -
https://i349.photobucket.com/albums/q399/beatnck2/12112009306.jpg

A rudimentry hub was made up so the rear wheel would roll, some top yoke mods and the tank painted.
We also added a sheep skull, with what appears to be a piston with some LED'S...... Neutral Laughing
https://i349.photobucket.com/albums/q399/beatnck2/12112009313.jpg
Liam (Mac_Kaliba) took a lot of time and effort in making a rearplate
https://i349.photobucket.com/albums/q399/beatnck2/12112009316.jpg

And by 4:30....
A fair bit more faffing around, and, to quote tenacious d, the beast was done Thumbs Up
https://i349.photobucket.com/albums/q399/beatnck2/13112009325.jpg
https://i349.photobucket.com/albums/q399/beatnck2/13112009328.jpg

Unfortunatley, we didnt win, or indeed come in the top 3...
Sadly for us we were competing with these wonders of engineering...

In 3rd place
https://i349.photobucket.com/albums/q399/beatnck2/13112009330.jpg

In 2nd place
https://i349.photobucket.com/albums/q399/beatnck2/13112009332.jpg

And in 1st place

We had to push it out of the workshop and down about 20 yards of main road.
The turning circle is so crap we took up both lanes, and even then had to 3 point turn it. So basically we stopped the centre of worcester for few extremely funny minutes Laughing

rigged if you ask me.
convenient that the charity one won even though its the shittest and required no engineering skill.

These were our sentiments exactly. I liked a few of the details they had on there such as the "Pimp" badge on the back..
well actually that was the best bit of the car Laughing but overall they just didn't put the same effort into it.

The disappointment was definitely felt throughout the whole team.
I know it's not like myself but me and Nick are actually quite bitter about it, I think the thing is we just feel as if our efforts have gone unrecognised.
It's a shame because the judges really didn't seem interested at all, there was no close scrutineering so I think they missed the overall quality and detail that went into the build.
I think they also missed the theme somehow, it wasn't in your face but it was obviously there.
(The vinyl on each side of the tank was actually an adaptation of a college week logo that I found on the website).

I will say though, I don't want to take anything away from Virus and his teams effort.
Honestly I didn't think we were going to be topped by their machine but it did have a theme (Wanky Racer Mr. Green) and some cool ideas,
for me though it just lacked slightly in the care of quality dept.
I do think it deserves its place in the top 3, well done that man. Thumbs Up
The other two winning examples though? Not really, it's just a joke.

Anyway enough of me being a sore loser, there were plenty of positives to the whole experience,
our Team really worked well together and we had a good time doing it.. We never expected to get on so well and we have something that we can genuinely feel proud about.
Not to mention that it's definitely been the best day of college this year by far (Thursday, not yesterday).

A few examples of the WIN.

What the hell! Yours is much cooler than the top 3!

The third place one is just a shite pitbike with an umbrella on the front!
Then a car with a load of painted cardboard glued on.

Then the top one is a shit car that's been driven into Halfords then a vinyl factory.

I say you gets yours actually working, MOT it and get it on eBay.

I assume you are doing engineering courses or something? No offense the bike looks cool, but there isn;t much engineering there, It would be far more impressive if the thing actually run but AFAICS there are no brakes or drive to the rear wheel. Whats the point? Same with the others seems to be very little skill other than being able to wead and buy a spray can.

I do actually think yours looks the coolest though.

Well thank you, the point of our bike was to look good, we decided that because we wouldn't have time to worry about the drive chain then we might as well strip the bike of all the controls etc for that minimalist look Laughing I've seen it done on showbikes.
We had a very short time period as I stated earlier in the thread (seven and a half hours) to complete the entire build.

Perhaps the most technical engineering was carried out by Ironhead_Tom and another kid called Tom on the Lathes, they made the spindle clamps/ bottom of the forks and they were slotted into the forks, I believe they had a zig zag fit which was a cool detail.

It wasn't really a test of our skills but more a challenge to see how quickly we could get it done, what we could imagine and most of all about the fun. Thumbs Up

Nice work, i especially like the vinyl work on the tank,
i do agree with others in here in saying that the 3 winners, arnt really in the same as what youve all made, perhaps a counter writeup by the pitbike team? Laughing
