Ok guys i dont know where to start looking for faster net to stream vids quicker and online gaming, i was wondering if i could ask you lot seeing as alot of you have set ups pc wise for gaming and XBL and PSN.
Currently get 2meg says speed test, and i have alot of problems keeping myself in the same party to my friends due to the fact mines slower.
Just basically looking for nice affordable and reliable fast broadband.
Any suggestions?

Hi

Is it actual download speed or how quickly it responds that is the issue?

Would have thought that 2mb would be fine.

All the best

i shouldn't think it's a problem with the actual speed as i used to have 1MB & that was fine on XBL & streaming.

Speed is not a issue with gaming as such.

Its all about timings. Unless you are streaming at the same time, then you will cause problems with the gaming.

Which isp are you with.
What is your quoted speed (modem/router, will give you that) ? Not what you get via a speed test.
Which exchange are you on, and does it have any decent LLU such as 02 or Be.

To answer a few questions, BT broadband, and urm if you mean how fast does it allow? if i hover over my wireless conector on the system tray it tells me 52meg?
As for the rest if you could tell me how to check all the stuff i need to answer i will gladly find out and tell you.

That 52 mb is the speed of the connection between your PC and router. I have had Bt twice and I will never have them again. Personally I think Virgin is one of the best you can get a 50mb connection from them but that is silly money, I have a 20mb for £30 a month it is a lot of money but I use the net ALOT you can get a 10mb one for about £15 I have tested my 20mb conenction and normally get about 18mb It has gone down twice in about 2 years but times I rung then up spoke to someone within 5 minutes who told me it was routine maintaince and would be back at (random time) usually 45 mins and it was.

Virgin get a big Thumbs Up from me.

See i've had bt since it first came out, and i hate it, i was worried about virgin as i'm sure a few people on here have had issues with them? but 20meg should be perfect as my brothers stream videos and play on other live accounts while i try to play on mine and i come off worse as i'm routed through the PC and they have the xbox wired to the router etc.
I could easily manage the £30 i think, though the 10 sounds more tempting.

Theres 3 xbox's, 1 wii, and 3 pc's, normally the pcs are all active at once and both of my xbox's are currently in use and the wii gets used a bit recently.

Hi

As the amount of data is unlikely to be the problem I am not sure that a faster connection will help. And not sure how much effect having 7 machines hammering the connection at once will have on the ping speed.

Could even be possible that the router isn't really capable of coping with the hammering.

All the best

Keith

Might be worth looking into a router with Quality of Service if you don't already have it. You can set this to prioritise gaming traffic over everything else.

Your bandwidth may be an issue, but usually the 'ping' is the most important.
The 'ping' is the time it takes for something to be sent to a remote server and return, if you don't know...
For instance I could get amazing bandwith (which is figure usually quoted, ie 2mbs) by walking across the room with a 1TB hard drive and plugging it into another computer - 50gbs+. However, were you to tell your character to fire and I then took the command over to the server by foot, it would be rather slow.

How can i get a ping reading? and can meg and ping not be related, ie, 10 meg ping 100ms 20 meg 50ms? etc?
I know your all face palming me... Embarassed but i've never had to deal with all this before, its all rather confusing and yes i spose my bt home hub version 1 is burnt out inside but that makes another issue appear in the fact i wouldnt know how to set up a router with the bt stuff.

Hi

Most online speed tests will also give a ping test as well

Speed and ping and not really related at all. For example satellite broadband can have a very high speed but really pathetic ping.

In engine terms think of it like power and throttle response. You might have a turbo 'busa with massive amounts of power but very poor throttle response.

All the best

Hi

Good question. Likely to be down to your ISP (but greatly limited by how far from the exchange you are, etc), but also likely to be down to your router.

Might be worth trying another router. Also try doing a far few speed tests and getting the ping figure, both just with a single PC and with people hammering the connection.

All the best

Keith

You need to post the actual stats from your router.
Such as its connection speeds up and down.
SNR readings

As for ping Try this

Is what i get

If other people are using the connection, then it will effect your gaming.

This is on a lousy line 7km from the exchange.

I use "Be unlimited" had no probs and quick connection, I think you get a router too. £22pcm advertised as UPTO 22mb, in reality I get 6/7mb all the time. No probs with xbox live connection and nice and quick downloads.

I used NTL before (which is now Virgin?) decent service when working but they kept double charging me and in the end had to issue county court summons to get refund - will never use again.

You will have a maximum speed regardless of how quick your ISP offers, this is due to the distance of your home from the exchange and the quality of the wires connecting to exchange. Not really alot you can do about this.

Just tried again at a more peak time and get 22m/s.

While it may say Be Unlimited. I use 02 LLU same group. Except i only pay £7.34 a month for a full 8 meg.

I also have a meter to monitor speeds and at no time did it use more than 0.3kB/Sec.
