Another /short/ ebay rant.

*one day* I would like a pristine headlight for the RVF and I know that they come up on ebay from time to time.
The usual starting bid was about £30~ and on occasions a mint example would come up for around this mark, they don't usually get a lot of interest so I was quite safe in the knowledge that when I had the cash to spare I could pick one up for a nice sum.. but oh no

A short while back someone starts an auction for a like new headlight with a buy it now of £80 which is fair enough I guess,
but suddenly every other cretin reckons that their piece is suddenly worth a hell of a lot more.
Nobody is going to bid on them for this price, not unless they are fucking A which the most of them are not.

The thing that just annoys me the most in general about ebay is how people blindly overvalue everything on there and as such defeat the entire point of the concept.
Is there any way to get around this? well that's a stupid question I know, to which the answer is probably "unlucky mate, no there is'nt".

I can see why so many people here have boycotted ebay and paypal, not just for this reason but for their general corporate whoring and extortionate fees.
To be honest when I am less needy of the occasional convenience then I might be forced to do the same.

One of the best books on the Ariel ( there are few publications that are historically true): The Ariel Story by Peter Hartley used to fetch about £40 on Ebay. Then the price started to go up and within six months a copy fetched £450. I mailed the winner of the auction about a week later ( you could do stuff like that back in the day) to inform him that the Ariel club were doing a reprint at £19.95 ( he was not a club member).

You can always message the seller offering them a reduced price once the auction has ended and nobody has bid.

I remeber I wanted something but forgot to bid (Can't remember what it was) I think it was up for £15, It didn;t sell so I offered the guy £20 He said he thought it would go for more and was going to put it up at a lower price I won it with no other bids for £10 a week later .

I use ebay a lot as a buyer and a seller - and have noticed the same thing happening.

personally i dont bother to raise the price as i like to sell my stuff, it it makes the opening bid then im happy ...

but these idiots who think there wortha fortune and list em at inflated prices loose out in the end as its costing them everytime they list

me i list 99% ofmystuff from1p - 99p and shift around 80% of it

Mmm...

I reckon its because when people have an object but no idea of it's value they only check on eBay. Every now and again a false bubble forms round a specific item, starting normally with someone who is being stupidly optimistic in their asking price.

Someone else see's it (looking for a guide price) and thinks 'aha' and so on and so forth.

That said, it gives a few moments of mirth when on here someone flags up an eBay ad for an old dustbin lid which is being sold for way more than it's really worth.

The wording of such adverts can be really funny... Usually along the lines of: "No wheels, no engine, no seat or roof, no steering wheel... thousands spent & great runner."
