im about to possibly buy a headlight off ebay with him ending the auction early.
The guy asked me to phone him, so i did.

He said he'd accept my offer, but to send the money as a gift so he doesnt get charges...

If this deal goes tits up and he tries to rip me off, can i still retreive the amount?
Or is a gift basically a one way transaction?

Im happy to pay the charges as im getting it pretty cheap, but i want some sort of means to do this, or some guarantee if he turns out to be a pikey.

He had an accent...

Im wary

cheers pay queers x

Its a one way thing. No chance of getting a refund. I got caught out with it to the tune of £80.

Be wary unless you can collect.

Sure better to use a paypal calculator to work out what his costs would be, and add that onto the amount you send?

Don't do it - it's a fairly well-known scam. Either offer to add on the charges (which won't amount to much if it's a low value item), or if possible offer to collect it in person and pay him in cash. That's assuming you still want to deal with him, of course.

A friend bought a netbook off somebody who asked him to declare the money as a gift in return for knocking a fiver off the price. Fourtunately he declined and paid in full. Said netbook never turned up of course, and when he opened a paypal dispute they said the guy had closed his account and run off. Luckily a few weeks later he opened another account from which they managed to recover almost the full amount. That's why I'd be very wary of any such request.
