You were speeding in that 20mph zone at the start. You should have been aware of the van to the right so that you didn't have to brake so hard and not speeding in the 30mph zone helps too. I guess that's what you are talking about.

But as already mentioned, you should have been aware of the van. Whenever I see a van in a junction I tell myself to act as if something is going to pull out behind it due to not seeing me. Lesson learned. .
