Hey guys and girls.

had my CBT this morning. was absolutly pissing it down with rain but was still fun (was at riverview if any new people are looking - the instructor was rarther dry witted, if you don't have a sence of humour you may find min offencive but ye i hope you know what i mean, good place to go anyway)

was thinking about the next step. (as i'm 22 i have 3 main options) to either pass on a 125 and ride that for 2 years,

get a 125 on learner plates and ride it around for a bit to get useed to it....then take the full test on a 500:

Or to get my test done using the in centre's bikes and jackets etc. and pass the full test on one of their 500s or whatever.

if i take option 3. would it be a good idea to go for a smaller bike (concidering age and insurance etc) to get like a 250 or 400 or something?

i know there's lots of similar posts but each one seems to be different :S i'm just getting confused ....

-edit. i know that as its my first bike i've got a high chance of dropping it or whatever.... so although i like the styling of sportsbikes it may not be a good idea due to fibreglass etc...

In all fairness if you have the money I would go for DAS and get something like a cbr400 rvf400,zxr400,vfr400.The insurance for the vfr400 nc30 for me is 300 quid third party fire and theft with 1 ncb and I`m 18.
Good luck

If you're nervous, I would suggest riding a smaller bike first for a while! Either DAS then get a smaller bike, or CBT first and ride a small bike for a year. I would guess that with the latter you'll struggle to wait 2 years nd just end up doing your DAS...
I was not initially confident when I started out; attending my CBT without ever having ridden a motorbike before. As such I got my CBT pass then rode a 125 for a year before going for the DAS. As a result I had a lot more confidence!

thanks for the replys you two. ye i was thinking that about the 2 year gap... basically i'd never riden before but by the end of the day my confidence was growing ( considering it was wet etc is why i was worried initially...)

if i passed my test on a 125 the limit is 33bhp. doesn't that mean i can still ride most 250s and some 400s or have i got my maths wrong? (i don't know that much about bikes so i'm still just working my way through all this....)

Hi, glad to hear you enjoyed your cbt!

I was in a similar question to you recently- get a 125 and then do DAS, go for DAS or do the A2 and ride restricted for 2 years.

I went for the a2- I had more chance of passing on a 125 and the experience I am getting on 33bhp is ideal for me- I rather go from small bhp to 33bhp and then whatever Smile The way I see it is a restriction isnt forever, and its a great time just to get experienced.

I am 21 by the way Smile and Im riding round on my other half's bandit 1250 which he got restricted for me Laughing

There are a lot of bikes, 250cc-400cc which are under 33bhp but I personally found tha for a decent one, some of the asking prices made me think it will be easier to just get a bigger one and restrict it- then when the kit comes off, its like having a new bike Smile

Good luck with whatever you decide!

I believe you are correct with the 33bhp limit; all I know is that whilst I was working in India over the summer I rode around on a 250... and when I came back to the 600 here it was phenomenal! 33bhp for 2 years is a limit I couldn't manage - but if you can then there's nothing to stop you taking that route.

I remember doing my CBT and in the training part the instructor asking me to do 30mph and me thinking "He must be crazy!" - but it only took a few weeks to feel at home on two wheels, and to start drolling over the bigger bikes!
Don't forget that you can do a shorter DAS if you've already got a CBT, so you won't be paying for that part twice.

Of course there's the cost issue which might also play a part (it did with me, I couldn't afford to do everything at once) so the gap might help you in that regard too.

I would not buy a 400 if you passed DAS, those bikes aren't very cheap to maintain and have been ragged to shit,

It doesn't make any sense for someone over 21 to do the 33bhp test. Do your DAS, you can get a 33bhp bike then if you want, as you'll have done DAS you'll be able to get a more powerful bike when you want one.

Do the 33bhp test and when you want more power you'll either have to pay extra to do the accelerated access test or you'll end up riding illegally derestricted. Do DAS in the first place. Smile

I think you should take it on a 500cc, as this can help getting up to the speed for the avoidence + emergency stop, instead of ragging it out of an old CG125.
