Hi,

Just finishing the fork seal change on my GN. I've driven the bushing in and the washer that sits under the seal. Now I'm driving the fork seal in (using a piece of PVC pipe and a hammer). It gets to a certain point and then won't go any further (just a few more mm until I can see the groove for the circlip).

Now this might sound like a silly question, but the writing on the seal should face towards the top of the fork, correct?

The bushing is definitely in all the way, and I've tried the washer both ways (not that it makes any difference).

Just wanted to check I'm not doing anything silly like putting the fork seal in the wrong way up.

Usually writing up, spring (and groove it sits in) down.

The bushing definately fully seated (you can usually hear the difference when it's fully driven home). You can afford to be reasonably rough with it, especially with the washer on top.

You haven't got the top and bottom bushes mixed up? The top bushing should have the coating on the inside.
EDIT: Ignore that, it's nonsense, the top bush wouldn't fit down the tube.

Maybe it's not going in properly because you're using a hammer and not knocking the seal in straight.

I had this problem, it was because i thought i'd driven the bushing all the way down, when there was still a couple mm left to go.

Edit: basically what stinkwheel said.

Cheers, I will make sure the bushing is seated properly.

it too late now as you've fitted them but what i do is coat the new seal with grease and make sure the the tube is clean from ally corrosion due to the steel circlip rusting .The Stinkwheel is right about the seal way up ,remember that fork seals contain a tiny metal band around the outside that is hidden under the rubber. If you've pushed the seals in quite a distance you may wreck en trying to take them out again .A big fat socket or hard wooden tube that fits on the edgedse can be used to tap the last few mill.I suspect they havent gone in all the way because of corrosion and crap still in the seal fittting .handy tip for forks.......if you dont want to remove the whole fork then just undo allen key at spindle end and remove fork stancion.
