Get a can of ACF50 and spray it all over the metal parts of the bike then get a rag and rub it in, will protect to a good level,

+1 anything metal on my bike except for brakes is wiped over with acf50 , 2.5 years old 6000 miles as of this morn and no rust anywhere, its garaged only at night, at work its locked up outside during the day. I wash the bike by hand and relube/protect every saturday morning, takes about 2hrs but im up early anyway.

Three options the expensive £20 a can ACF50 method

The cheaper scot oil 365 method (it builds up layers of crud on your bike if you do not wash it off which offer ok protection).

The grease method, if you can cover the bike in cheapo generic grease which is water repellant it looks nasty and you get horrible stains everywhere but come summer time you can remove it with the cheapest bog roll you get in Asda and it comes up nice and sparkly.

I use a thin film of petroleum jelly on bits prone to rust (mostly my bars, which are ancient but comfortable and I can't find any exactly the same).

Waxoyl does the same job as grease but is marginally tidier and easier to remove.

I found just rinsing the bike off with cold water every day with the occasional clean and quick wipe over with some fs365 kept corrosion at bay last winter. Will be doing the same this winter too.

Don't put vaseline on the fork stanchions though. I've read that it'll rot the seals, apparently...

To remove surface rust from chrome, use Coke (the fizzy drink, not the powedered substance!) poured over then rub with a chunk of potato.

Sounds bonkers but it works a treat!

As for keeping rust at bay, I just used to use an oily rag dipped in old engine oil on metal work.

Chrome doesn't rust... thats why they use it as an ingredient in Stainless Steel..... to make it 'stainless"..

The rust is the mild steel under the chrome.... which means your chrome plating has already failed...
