Hi...

I've been away from biking for a long time due to my bike being stolen and financial difficulties. My CBT has ran out so I'm going to have to do that again too.

Well, I'm getting some compensation within the next few weeks and am itching to get back on the bike trail.

My initial plan was to re-do my DAS (I failed mod 1 the first time) and wait til I have some more cash to get a full power bike. But I'm beginning to think that I should just re-do my CBT, buy a very decent 125 and then do my restricted licence or just get loads of practice in again before I re-do my DAS.

I just wanna have a little bit of fun and something to pootle around the city on for the near future...I'd love a big bike, but my funds won't stretch to CBT > DAS > Bike + Insurance...

What do you lot think?

Fun yes, but not a good investment.

All the best

So you don't think I should have it as my one and only mode of transport?

I just want a decent 125 until I can afford the bigger bike test...fed up of CG/CBR...

Get a CG AND do the big bike test with the money you would have spent on a mito or RS125.

Do the restricted test on the CG to save you money.

No.

Pay that little extra and do the DAS. Being on a restricted licence is the biggest pain in the arse ever.

I haven't got enough money and am not prepared to risk failing the DAS again just for the sake of doing the DAS.

I've had a CG for ages and it was boring...fed up of riding slow 125s about.

What this man said, the restricted licence is a fucking joke.

Go DAS. Thumbs Up.

Not if you don't actually restrict it. Shhh! Whistle

Hell of a lot of hassle if you do get caught though so don't do it. Tut Tut

I agree with the DAS being worth it though, but the op seemed to be short on money so that's why I suggested it.

If that's all you want then I say go for a 125 2-stroke. I hear that the NSR is the one to go for as it's more reliable than the italian ones. Look into the KMX125 also.

Keith - Although i agree with 99% of your posts, and have an immense amount of respect for your advice etc.. i'd have to disagree with this!

I Bought an NSR about 9 months ago for £1100, 13k miles, looks immaculate, runs perfect, doesn't get abused (too much) or trashed, never been down the road, and i'm going to be selling it in the next few months and expect to get at least what i've paid for it back.. which would surely make it a good investment?

I do apreciate that the vast majority of NSR's, RS's, Mito's etc will have been raped and most likely dropped, but i do believe that if your carefull when you buying a 125, you can get a good deal!

Hi

To an extent I agree but the trouble is you are relying on getting a good deal when buying it and selling it to someone who isn't getting a good deal. As likely as your deal is buying one for £2500 (ie, highest price on one on Biketrader at the moment Shocked ) and selling it for £1100.

With any faired bike, especially for a learner bike, any minor drop will damage the fairing and wreck the resale value.

Like for like you will make a loss. Buy new and the loss will be quite hideous.

All the best

Keith

If I was looking for something that would be a bit of fun whilst coping well with commuting duties, and would also hold its value pretty well, I'd go for a DT125R.

Aprilias are pretty fragile (compared to bulletproof commuters like the YBR, GS, RXS, CG etc) and their value drops like a stone.
