Fortunately the current lot will be kicked out before this can gather pace. Its hard to believe that new labour reps are still extolling the virtue of ID cards.

That odious woman who used to be home sec was on TV saying people kept coming up to her in the street to say "Why can't we have our ID cards now!" Presumably because they were desperate to be relieved of the £90 odd it'll cost.

I understand that politicians have to tow the line etc, but they have to realise what an obvious crock of shite they spout.

This is also the first mention of penalties if you don't keep your details up to date, a la DVLA database? (I did suspect it, but it's the first I've heard from a government drone.) They will be automated of course and exceedingly hard to appeal.

My main fear is the Tories (who'll probably get in next year) will say so much has been spent on it to date, it would be a profligate waste not to see it through. I think in Scotland though, it won't be adopted in anycase.

Hi

Think the tories would have loved such a scheme 20 years ago but realised that they couldn't get away with anything like it without appearing to be far right control freaks. Labour got away with.

However I suspect that it will be an obvious candidate for cost savings when the tories get in. One of many things where it is far cheaper to pay a bit of unemployment benefit rather than just creating jobs which land up making life more difficult for everyone.

If they got rid of all the other forms of ID and licences, then one card does all could be a good thing, BUT it wont, it will be abused, it will be counterfeited and it will end up a total ball ache.
