When you were pulled, did you get a verbal notice of intended prosecution? It would have sounded something along the lines of "You will be reported for consideration of the question of prosecuting you for this offence." I was given one of those when I was pulled at 104 on the M6; meaning that they don't need to post you one within 14 days. Two months later a court summons dropped on the doormat.

The court process is simple, I wasn't going to deny anything so went to court (no option to supply a guilty plea by post), put my hands up and admitted guilt - I was slapped with a 30 day driving ban and £100 fine; no points. Any other endorsements you have on your licence (which you don't have by the looks of it) are irrelevant as they occurred before the date of the offence. Note that the ban they issue is with immediate effect - so don't drive yourself there.
Interestingly my insurance quote still went down the next year.

Basically you can expect to be getting a summons to court, and a fine/ban/points - the combination of which depends on the magistrate of the day.
Be aware that fines are means tested... meaning that as I had basically zero income at the time as I was still at university my fine was considerably less than the maximum!

You know how sometimes in London a cycle lane will have have a big stopping area just for the bicycles before a set of lights?

https://bristol.indymedia.org/attachments/aug2009/van_blocking_cycle_lane_on_cheltenham_road_low_res.jpg

I stopped in the cycle lane once and got threatened by a massive fine and 3 points on my licence by a motorcycle copper who pulled up next to me. As he was shouting at me through his helmet loads of other bikers also pulled up next us waiting for the lights to change. It was absolutely hilarious in my mind as the copper turned his head and got really angry at all those bikers too. Eventually (20 seconds later) he was holding up the traffic so he let us all all go.

The reason why I say this is because if you can get three points for doing that, the future looks bleak for getting out of points now it's been proven that you were speeding. Sorry dude.

I'm pretty sure you will get a short ban and a fine.

IIRC from reading posts on here you get the 3 points and 60 quid fine for 10mph over speed limit.

A friend was caught at 46 in a 30 and got a 42 day ban and 200 quid fine.

77 in a 30 and let off.

Not as bad as it seems. Firstly it was in the Irish Republic, Secondly the section of road was normaly open limit (but because of road works was reduced to a 30). Thirdly it was late at night.

The guard (irish cop) followed me for the next hour though.

I doubt that very much... otherwise a lot of people on getting tagged with points for "variable" speed limits are going to need to get them removed!
Variable limits aside, motorway sections with average speed cameras during roadworks also result in points and fines.

Sounds like you got lucky!

Getting points does seem to be a matter of luck - a friend of mine once pulled up at the side of the road to drop his mate off, but he stopped just past a pedestrian crossing and just within the zig-zags. It was a quiet highstreet, he had stopped on his side of the road so wasn't likely to hide any potential pedestrians from any potential traffic (wide road), and was stopping for only a few seconds - unfortunately for my friend a policeman was nearby and gave him three points and a £60 fine straight away, no questions asked, no warning. Yes he was in the wrong but it seems unfair in comparison to some of the speeding people have been let off with!

The law can be annoyingly black and white at times, yet where there is discrepancy it sometimes seems to be based on the personality or mood of the policeman/other or any stereotypes they may have. Then I suppose that's why people DO get away with things!

I guess you can't always win.

I've been stopped for speeding only twice (neither time was the speed actually recorded, I don't think). Both times I was contrite and said I had no excuses, I had enough experience to know how dangerous speeding was, could end up killing someone, doing myself a permanent mischief etc. Both times coppers were impressed by me not trying to bullshit them and let me off with a producer.

Find it astonishing I haven't been pulled more. I must have an honest face (or a slow bike) Wink I do seem to have a sixth sense for knowing when the old bill are around. Comes in handy.

When I got pulled over for speeding in the Trossachs near Loch Lomond, the coppers who laser gunned me did me for doing 42 in a 30. At that point, they gave me the option of pleading guilty by post and wrote me a ticket there and then. 3 points and £60 was the damage. He did say that had I been doing 45+, I would have been turning up to court, but said that whatever I would have been served with would be dependent on the magistrates on the day. It could be £100 and 30 day ban or £60 and 6 points etc.

i pleaded guilty by post for 58 in a 30, just make sure you fill in the mitigation bit of the paperwork and make it sound like you learned your lesson and really need the bike for work. unless you would prefer the ban to avoid points ofcourse then just leave that blank, tbh i dont think you will get a ban for 53 in a 30. I was stopped for 58 in a 30 in my case and recieved 6 points and a £180 fine...............still fuckin rediculous considering that there was no victim or any ill effect to anyone at all, you get less for breaking and entering these days, tis a fuckin joke.

i have a general hatred for the penalty of speeding offences, considering 99.9% of them are victimless offences.

I recently got 6pts and £255 fine for doing 69MPH in a 40 limit. Fuckers caught me less than 10m after coming off a 70MPH dual carriageway.

It goes by percentages over the speed limit, not the MPH over etc.

They're cunts, trust me on that. I got a letter with all the court date and gubbins, pleaded guilty by post, explained the reasons etc.

A week after the court date I got a letter saying there was a new court date and I had to attend because they were looking at banning me. Turns out they didnt read anything I had to say, the magistrate is looked at the limit and the speed and set a new date. Waste of my time.

I doubt you'll get banned but they'll make you feel like scum in the process. Some people like the short ban as your license comes back clean but I doubt the insurance company will do ya any favours.

Then the next case will be some 15 year old who stole a car etc who'll get away with a £10 fine and a slap on the wrist.

The Magistrates Guidelines set it at 6 penalty points for 51-60mph
in a 30mph limit.

I got 6 points for 52 in a 30 a few months back on my previously "clean" license.

These are the aforementioned guidelines they use for setting
the points and fine. Plus you'll get some court costs and a £15
non-existant victim tax to pay:

I've pulled over for speeding twice, both times it was 45 in a 30 zone & both times all I got was a condesending lecture & told to clear off & don't let me catch you again

once, I was on my way home from a mates at about 4am, & the other was on my way to work at about 5am so no one else was about I guess that must have worked in my favour

well, they say "third times the charm"

Sorry, it's the fact that you think you were hard done by for getting 6 points and a fine for doing almost double the speed limit (in what was presumably a built up area given the limit) that is ridiculous !

Yes, speeding in itself is a victim-less offence and some speed limits are rather slow, but the fact is that you hit somebody at 58 and there is a 95% + chance they are going to die.

Just to lay my cards on the table I have recently done a speed awareness course for doing 36 in a 30 in the car. So am not as pure as the driven snow myself. But at least I can appreciate that I broke the law and accept the consequences.

i to accepted the consequences as it's pretty hard not to, does'nt mean i gotta be happy about it.

I also could have gone a lot faster in relative safely on that particular road as the 30 limit on there is a joke.
