If visibility is good and the offending vehicle is doing less than 70mph in the fast lane, with the middle lane free, then I don't consider it dangerous. It's always good practice to use the left lanes and leave the right lanes purely for overtaking, but some people persistently think it's nice to congest the fast lane... resorting to the rest of us undertaking. Wouldn't be undertaking doing the ton-plus though.

Hi

Not comfy most of the time with "undertaking". If there is a clear lane between me an the centre lane owners club member then yes, and only then just pass, rather than scream past.

Too many barely check their mirrors before moving left, let alone look properly.

All the best

Keith

Tip from cop I know.

Approach from behind fast and make it obvious you want to get past them. If they do not move over to middle lane then flash lights.

If they still don't move well then middle lane is a possibility but pay attention I suppose.

Highway Code states

268
Do not overtake on the left or move to a lane on your left to overtake. In congested conditions, where adjacent lanes of traffic are moving at similar speeds, traffic in left-hand lanes may sometimes be moving faster than traffic to the right. In these conditions you may keep up with the traffic in your lane even if this means passing traffic in the lane to your right. Do not weave in and out of lanes to overtake.

To me if the car muppets are doing 70mph in the third overtaking lane and you undertake you are breaking the law, not only that if you are on a bike you just give the rest of us a bad name.

If I come up behind a car in the fast lane I usually slow down behind it, gives me a chance to get my head together and take a normal breath. Then when they do pull back in I get to drop it into 2nd and rag it up to speed again which is my most enjoyable part of motorway antics. Smile

I undertake all the time, motorway or not.

It might make me look like a d*ck but then slow cars should not be in the 'fast lane'. We really should take tips from the French and move the fcuk out of the way when someone is going quicker than you... Twisted Evil

i dont consider it that bad, though i understand the inherent risks

if im on a motorway, and someone is going slower than i want to go, il go behind them, if they dont get the hint and move over then ill undertake them happily enough

i find it most satisfying doing it to audi drivers , as they take it personally Mr. Green

Every day on the A13 there are tons of numpties sitting in the middle/outside lanes going slowly (anything between 30 and 50), leaving the inside lane free so I just swan along it, 'passing' huge lines of them. This is even when there are no exits for a few miles. Rolling Eyes

Edit: People do get done for 'driving without due care and attention' whilst sitting in the middle/outside lanes whilst the inside lane is clear. And what's with this 'fast lane' thing? There is no fast lane, they're overtaking lanes. Thumbs Up

You are breaking the law just the same as if the car is doing 70mph in the middle lane and you overtake.
By the very act of riding a bike, you give 'the rest of us a bad name' to some people.
It is not illegal to undertake. However, if the police radar you doing it at 119mph, they apparently aren't too impressed and make talk of 'dangerous driving'.

If there's no car in the middle lane, I will go right over to the left hand side of it, though that will depend on the situation in the left hand lane of course.
I find it's generally safer with a reasonably high differential between your speed and the car's speed. That way, the car's not got much time to do anything silly. Of course you have to have good observations etc to make sure you will react as soon as the situation changes.
Where possible I try and indicate early and move early, so if a car is looking, they won't try and panic to get out of my way.

If the left hand lane provides a safe situation, then I'd say it's probably safer than filtering generally if you get over - however I do find that going between two cars next to each other tends to be relatively 'safe' compared to staggered cars more spaced out.

I agree. Especially when filtering - cars in 'staggered' formation tend to change lanes a hell of a lot, often without signalling and/or looking (as well as those who signal and change lanes at the exact same time as if their indicator grants them right of way).

My answer would be the same as somebody (apologies for my ignorance), mentioned after hearing advice from a police officer.
If you want to make progress then just flash your lights and gesture, hopefully they'll move out of the way, or speed up allowing you to continue.
[Just to clarify, I see this as safe driving/ riding, if somebody is in the fast lane travelling at say 60mph]

I don't really agree with undertaking somebody hogging the fast lane, although in certain circumstances it can certainly be justified safely.

What winds me up is when I'm travelling at 70-75 (A perfectly adequate speed) in the fast lane, making steady and hasty progress past the traffic in the centre lane; and somebody comes up behind me flashing their lights telling me to move out of the way, or accellerate for their gain.
Usually I'll increase my speed slightly as not to be the cause of a backlog and potentially an accident. I understand that we all speed at times, and it doesn't bother me if somebody else is speeding, it's up to them. However it does anoy me when they're forcing me to alter my driving to allow them to break the law.

90mph may be just as perfectly adequate as 75mph would be in the right conditions. 1mph over 70 is technically breaking the law.

If you're cofortable to do 5mph over the speed limit, don't hold back someone who's comfortable to do 20mph over the speed limit just because you're not comfortable with that. Let them past.

That's my general method - I'm very polite about it too, stay a decent distance back and a quick flash to let them know I'm there. Did it in the car last night, cue the corsa pretending to move out the way then swerving back at the last moment, then a bit of brake testing. When I eventually got past there was a teenage chavette driving (I was surprised - I thought they confiscated huge hoop earrings at the Buckinghamshire borders). Her boyfriend in the passenger seat looked terrified!

It's a difficult one - I do move over and always try to be the second fastest car on the section of road I'm on so it annoys me when people are in the way. I can see ReadySalted's point to some extent though - if you're in the middle of an overtake and the person behind has just come up at ridiculous speeds and wants you out of the way instantly it gets silly.

Personally, I've always considered flashing lights to be a bit rude.
If it's safe to get past, I'll get past, if not I'll wait.

Not that I've found others flashing me much of a problem... possibly a few times in the van or towing, but where possibly I always will pull in generally - unless I know I'm going to get trapped by a queue of cars when I get to the next car in the middle lane in thirty seconds.

Depends how big the gaps are between vehicles in the lane 2, but generally there should be space to move in. Lane 3 is not the fast lane it is an overtaking lane so if not overtaking you shouldn't be in it.

All the best

What's wrong with just indicating right? It's a clear, non-threatening indication you want to pass without all that drama of the headlight flashing and gesturing.

It works, too. Thumbs Up

It works in europe, but no round north west london & bucks... especially on my commute home where the main dual carriage way has breaks for right turns.
