Belt sanders remove a lot of material very quickly, so good for rough jobs or large areas, like a thick wood floor etc, but can scratch the wood if used in the wrong direction, and obviously no good for detail.

Somewhere in the middle is a random orbital sander, has some kind of clever bearing that gives a random movement to the pad meaning you can go in any direction with making a mess of the grain.

If you want stuff like furniture, window frames etc, detail sanders like black and decker mouse or similar are probably the best bet, i've got one, they go through sheets like nobodies business and still can't get everywhere, but pretty good for small areas.

There is no single sander that will do it all.

Waste of money, should have just gone down the beach and got a load of sand and rubbed it over your furniture. When you're done, you can even build a castle.
