Race scrubs for the road

Hi lads, anyone do this? Is there any issue using scrubs on the road. I have an easy supply of Supercorsas, Michelin Power Ones and Metzeler racetecs. Are they a bit overkill for daily use or generally ok if you warm them up ok?

Never had any problems with mine, I always buy them rather than brand new tyres, especially when they only cost me 50 quid a pair.

Yeh he'll do that for you mate, as long as your not miles away from where he's based (Longton)

Do it all the time.
Supercorsas I find often have more grip cold than 'touring' style tyres when warm. Racetecs many people believe are the same tyre with a different tread pattern.
I find supercorsas often warm up pretty well, but in some winter riding conditions even a proper set of block pattern wets don't warm up on track, so you're going to have no chance with any tyre on the road.
The Michelin Pilot Race's I had were absolutely terrible from cold and there's no way I would put them on a road bike. Can't comment on the power one.

Glyn - What sort of cost do you know?

G - Yea i'd heard the SC and RT's were same tyre I just feel a bit overkill with them for the road but worth a go I think. Either way £50-70 for scrubs is a damn site better than £220 new.

Brought some part worn d209gps and they lasted nearly as long as a new set would have. Id much rather pay £60 then £200ish even if i get a few less miles out of them. Grip was superb and they worked well from cold. Not great in the wet though.

Race scrubs are the way to go, unless you need tyres in a hurry, and can't get your hands on some.

They square off quicker, but as they cost a lot less, you can just replace them more often.

If you get race scrubs, just be careful they havn't done too many cycles.

I could sell my supercorsas as part worn race tyres, as they are bubbled from track use, but due to being used on the road a fair bit, coupled with 2 hot trackdays....they seem to have lost all semblence of grip.


They are quite fun, while also being totally terrifying....but I refuse to spend money on new ones, as they will only get ruined over winter...might aswell use the ruined ones while I'll be doing the slower riding over winter anyway...

It's deffinatly the way to go, the supercorsa's seem to be the best, during summer they started graining quite abit for me if i wasn't hanging about, the grip was excellent

I find the fronts tend to go over time with road use through heat cycles/age, but I tend to have worn the rears down before they have the chance - at least for them to have noticeably worse grip.
Tried to do a burnout the other day to get a bit of heat into the rear and it just kept pushing the front . I've got some tyre on my spare wheel, not sure what, must check it.

+1 for races scrubs here to i use them on the back of the dl650 (dunlop sportsmax triple compound). I get a front and a back for £20 the front wont fit the dl so i give that to the guy who fits my tyres to flog and he fits the rear for free .

Another plus one for the scrubs, on my second pair now of Racetecs and loving them, my mates still marvel over them and cant believe their grip.

When I had my first pair fitted, my tyre guy said be careful of tank slap on the country roads, that put the wind up me when I rode them to be honest, but I soon forgot about that and never had an issue with tank slap at all.

Race scrubs are ok for the track but you will never keep them at the right operating temp they need to work properly when road riding. Better of with something like 2cts or the Dunlop rrs etc
