Hi everyone, just joined this forum looking for some help with my first geared motorbike, ive been riding 2-stroke scooters for about 5 years but the time has come to move up to a geared bike & so i bought myself a honda nsr 2001, im well pleased with it but im having many problems, heres 3 to start with.

ok first up my honda nsr smokes like hell, i drained the old 2-stroke oil & put some fresh fully synthetic oil in but it still smokes badly, i read somewhere this might be a head gasket gone? any other ideas or tips what might be the problem.

secondly i got myself 2 pairs of oxford mini indicators to replace the broken original indicators but this seems to overloaded the flasher relay, so i picked up a new one off ebay which will apparently cure the problem, but where is the relay flasher on the honda nsr 2001?, im having trouble finding it. Embarassed

& lastly the bike didnt come with an airbox filter so i tracked one down & fitted it but its such a pain to fit in properly, is there any tips for getting the damn thing plugged & seated in properly to the carburettor? Mad

its nice to meet you all & heres hoping someone can help me, Cheers!

smoky NSR come from :
- bad adjustment on the pump
- crank seals worn
the relay is under your seat near the seat catch
the power bulbs should be 10W but generaly this kind of winkers has 21W bulbs , so i recommand a chanhe of bulbs inside each (socket type is generaly Ba9s)

Does it smoke when it starts and then not so much when warmed up?

led bulbs might balance out your winkers ,they use less power.but try a new flasher unit and check all the indicator lamps imside for corrosion and tired rubbin wiring. The honda's have a good reputaion for longevity and reliability ,nearly as good as a tzr. Its worth keeping and well worth doing a running restotation.

ok i managed to sort the indicator troubles with a new more powerful indicator relay.

as for the smoking it tends to tick over just fine with practically zero smoke until i rev it up & white smoke pours out of the exhaust, if i stop revving it settles down to normal again. i left it ticking over for 30 mins today & white smoke still pours out when i rev it alittle.
another thing i tried was putting my hand over the exhaust to see if it was steam or water coming out but it was spitting out black oily stuff, maybe the oil pump set up wrong? i managed to find the oil pump & it has a cable in there which seems to be adjustable but i never tried it just incase i messed it up.

it's an error to fit 40W relay because the power limit of the alternator . if you ride at night and you put winkers you'll see your healights dimming , which is very annoying . so the best way is to replace the 21W bulbs inside each indicator by 10W model (generaly Ba9s socket) and keep your original relay

Don't leave it idling for that long!

2 strokes don't like it and it will make more problems. Your spark plug is probably black now covered in soot and crap.

my nsr smokes a bit for the first 1/2 mile or so when riden from cold, but then clears, but if i leave it sitting idling such as at a set of lights then pull off you still get a sslight puff of oil.............if it stops smoking all together its time to worry as thats when it will seize! lol I wouldnt recommend adjusting the oil pump on the nsr unless you are 100% sure of what you are doing.............download the workshop manual off here its very useful. Smile

mate
just warm it up properly and then absolutley thrash it, will be soooo gunged up from 30mins of ticking over, it will really really cough and splutter at like 7000 rpm when ya do it but just hold it open and it will clear itself, take it just up the the redline through the gears

make sure its warmed right up before you do this

your plug will probably be totally fouled aswell, either clean it up or change it.

2 strokes like to be revved all the time, ya should go full throttle to the redline at least once each time ya use it, it wont hurt it providing it properly warmed up, ya must never rev it hard when its cold
