It's my last week of my job, I am being made redundant, and although I have been in my job for a year, had the keys to the door, trusted to keep the shop running until the manager gets in, trusted to do the work and do my best so far...all of a sudden, because it's my final week I am being treated like an imbecile.

Grrr Mad it gets my goat.

I have been forthcoming and told my regular customers I am going, and they have all been really sweet, some have even offered me character references which is great, but my manager is treating me like something else...!

So that's why I'm online instead of doing work. Sod 'em!!! I would usually have got two or three pieces of work done by now...but if he wants to treat me like a child, that I'm untrustworthy, well I'm damned if I am going to work when he's not here!!!

Unfortunately, you are probably being judged by the conduct of others. I know of several people in a company I used to work for who became very light fingered after they were told they were being made redundant. Don't take it personally, although I would do what you are doing and think 'Sod 'em'. Put your feet up and relax Mr. Green

Cheers

Look up garden/gardening leave. I'm pretty sure it allows you to leave and go job hunting, while still getting paid until your redundancy date. I may be wrong...

I'm currently part of an 11 man team in which 3 members have been given voluntary redundancy and next week is their last week. They've since done bugger all work and spend the entire time on the internet and ignoring phones. The managers don't bother them and I'm supposed to pull them up if they don't answer phones and keep the work going.

Bugger that... I'd be doing the exact same thing if I were in their shoes anyway! Laughing

The rest of the team are now training up contractors to replace them... Confused

Bazza's rule of employers #1: There is no employer on the planet who wouldn't sack an employee in a heartbeat if they thought it would protect/increase their profits. Not one.

steal all the knowledge and buissness practice and apply for a job at another dry cleaners , unfortunatley in that line of work there's litlle of value to steal ,unless you are a transvestitie ,or do the math and work out is it worth having the keys copied so you can nip back at a later date and steal the computer.

or is it time for a work related injury ,that cleaning solvent stuff is bound to have casulties .If so do'nt use work net to enquire for symtoms and a good solicitor as the boss will have the records of net traffic .If you've enquired already then to do the work related injury you''ll have to steal the p.c. anyway. Have you used up all your sick entitlement.Because of your work relatied injury he 's closing the shop before he has to pay compo to you ,thus imcriminating himself.

Being good at your job doesn't save it in this situations unfortunately. Cock smoking on the other hand... I've seen many a good lad lose his job because he didn't smoke the cock but the lads that say 'yes' a lot (and often can't do the job properly) somehow keep theirs. People that may have had a run in with management at some point usually go as well. Funny that. Rolling Eyes

(Big) Companies love redundancies.

Employers get very skittish with those they've made redundant in the last few days of their time.

I remember when I left Fujitsu, I resigned giving one months notice, they besically wouldn't allow me to do anything. On the last day I was essentially frog marched from the building after having been threatened with a strip search for all the access cards we used to need to service POS equipment in post offices.

It's par for the course, I couldn't help thinking they were just miffed I was leaving even although my last few months were extremely adversarial. The management really were shitheads, they kept asking if I was sure I was doing the right thing. I said yes, superannuated pension, 37.5hr working week versus shit pension, 60+ hrs only partially paid and you want me to commute weekly to Hull from Edinburgh? I think it's a good move...

Anybody who leaves my work be it through there own will or against it is escorted briefly to their desk and then straight out of the building! lots of trade secrets in oilfield chemicals apparently. I have a good number of the formulations in my head anyway Mr. Green

No.
I am an artworker (graphic design) in a small print shop. The manager (of 6months) is buying the business, and his girlfriend is coming in to take my place, hence them giving me the heave-ho.

They said it's due to money, but listening to his extravagent plans on redecorating, moving the shop around, taking on new stock etc. doesn't actually sound like they will be that skint! Rolling Eyes

If he's being arsey with you it's probably to upset you enough so that you just walk out, thus he doesn't have to give you any redundancy.

Which makes your 'redundancy' illegal. Your position has to become redundant, i.e., a job that no longer needs to be done, so getting somebody else to replace you is not allowed. In reality you're being sacked, not made redundant.

Just because it's a small company doesn't mean they can flaunt the law, so you should talk to your nearest CAB or ACAS.

Paivi - my boss is selling the business. So there is no job for me anymore. What the new owner does is his choice. The business was not sold with me included.

It's okay, I have already checked my rights.

As it is, they said 'according to my contract, they were obliged to give me 4 weeks redundancy notice.' But they didn't read it very well, because it actually states one weeks notice. But I didn't point this out for obvious reasons. Thumbs Up

when I was made redundant after 20 years of being in one of the most highly trusted positions, they all but kept me away from anything that involved honesty for the last month. It was funny though that they had to keep coming to me to do the sensitive stuff as they didn't have a clue. It was even funnier that in the last week I was there that they had a raid, Only £8k was taken, they knew it couldn't have been me as there was £450k in the room that they missed................... I wouldn't have. Twisted Evil

I think that you may indeed be wrong. I can't be bothered to Google it but as far as I am aware gardening leave isn't optional. Gardening leave is imposed upon an employee whilst they are serving their notice. It means that the employer does not want the employee on the work premises but does not want them to work for someone else whilst they are on notice and still being paid. It is called gardening leave because that is pretty well all that you are allowed to do, tend the garden!

You are allowed time off to attend interviews as I've done it at two work places in the past when they've gone belly up, don't think it's called anything specific and I think it's only to attend an interview not to actually job hunt, I could well be wrong on that point though...

Places where I have been let go from, they are so proficient at letting go of staff, and used to people being miffed, that they literally escort you off the premises on the day you get the news.

Makes sense really, as you arent going to get much work out of someone who is being let go.

I'm a bit shocked at skudd betraying is scouse roots and not having a try for £450k.

Any self respecting scouser, would rob a student for 10p, so leaving an employer who just let you go with £450k, seems a bit out of character
