ok so im sitting here all excited that i have my module two coming up but all im worrying about is this stupid restrictor thing, i have been told soooo many stories about engines messing up becvause of them.
some people say it wont damage your engine some say its the worse thing for it. i have an rvf 400 but its dyno jetted (and the most awesome thing ever) im super overprotected of it so when people say kiss your engine goodbye, it makes my want to not get it restricted at all and risk it!! i am 21 in 10 months so could get it restricted and then do DAS....but still thats 10 months of engine strain!

the other thing is i have a small plug in device on my bike that allows you to remap the ecu....could i remap it to 33bhp, there for not touching my engine?

is there any other way then those silly little £172 washers?

thanks,

kirsty

p.s i feel better already after that rant!

stop panic-ing Kirstie,

Restricting your bike via washer set up will be fine. All it does it restrict the airflow into the engine. Less air + less fuel = less power.

If you are really worried, you could go about getting a throttle stop fitted and dyno'd so it made 33bph.

TBH, I would go with the washers, but £172 seems very very dear. You should be able to buy and have fitted a pair for < £100

im a woman, panicking is all i know!

thank you for the advice, though....eased my fears a little, i went to steve jordan's and they quoted me £300 pounds to get a restrictor and fit it....is that fairly steep?
i dont mind paying that much if my bike gets the best, but cheaper alternatives are always welcome!

i will look into the throttle restriction....

thanks,
kirsty

Hi

The washer type of kit on a bike with CV carbs (ie, like your RVF) just restricts the airflow after the carbs, and will have pretty much the same effect on the engine as just only opening the throttle about 1/3.

With a modern fuel injected bike with secondary throttles operated by the ECU you could possibly remap it to reduce power. However at most all that you can electronically "remap" on yours would be the ignition timing and that wouldn't really work to limit it to 33hp.

£300 is a hell of a lot to restrict the bike. There is no legal reason why you must have any particular kit or have any proof of restriction, but the FI kits that dealers commonly sell are expensive. Added to which I suspect the RVF is a pig to get the carbs off and work on.

All the best

Keith

£300 is wayy too much to pay.

Throttle stop is probably the cheapest way without finding some used restrictor washers on ebay and fitting them yourself.

If you go down the standard route of getting the FI international washers fitted to your bike by a garage then you are talking at least £200 (you won't get it for £100 or less if you do this because the kit costs somewhere in the region of £170 before charges for actually fitting the washers.)

This is the best route to go down if you want no hassle and have money to burn. I wouldn't give FI international a penny if I were you.

Ask on here and 400cc sports bike forums for washers as there will be bound to be a set for sale. Make sure you get it for the same model as your own bike. eg NC30, NC35 or whatever you have. Then fit them yourself or ask on here if there is someone who'd be willing to help you out for a bit of beer money or something.

I actually got washers made up for my bike. It cost me somewhere in the region of £30. Fraser H Cameron off of here was kind enough to trust me regardless of me being a new member with one of his washers as a template.

I didn't bother ever fitting the washers though. I decided the gains were worth the risk. If you're being sensible, have pre-prepared answers if questioned on it at the roadside then you're probably not going to get caught.

I would encourage you to get the bike restricted though as if you crash and they check then you're talking 6 points minimum and you'll be applying for your provisional again.

That is some sound advice there. Dont worry about getting a "certificate" from an FI international as it really doesn't make a difference. If the police think your bike is deresticted, they will take it for testing anyway.
