Maybe Stinkwheel can help with this.

I have a lump in the back of my hand, most likely caused by a growth of protective tissue around a piece of glass. It causes a weird unpleasant feeling when it gets moved around or hit, so I decided it was time to try and remove it. I got through the skin ok but the lump appears to be attatched to what I think is the nerve that runs right through that area. I cut the lump open, but what with too much blood and it being very painful each time the icecube wore off I didn't have much success. I also tried stabbing it with a pair of very sharp modelling tweezers and levering it out, but it won't come. I've tried to feel for the glass in it but no joy with that either. I'd be much more brutal with it IF I could be sure that's it's either not attatched to a nerve or, if it is, won't pull the nerve apart if I force it.

So, the question is, does a protective cyst tend to attatch to nerve-tissue?

No idea but direct stimulation of a nerve is hideous not just a bit stingy. Have you tried burning it with a hot nail?

home surgery isnt a very good idea.

i had the bone graft site on my hip get infected after a proper op, and tried a bit of self help.
this involved stabbing the wound several times with needles and squeezing hard to get the puss out.
needless to say, the recently operated on injury split, and resulted in a bit more hospital time.

you'll probably only make it worse.

or... just grip it with pliars, grit your teeth and pull hard.

What good would that do? If it, or at least the piece of glass inside it, isn't removed it'll just form again. I need to get it out without trashing the nerve and losing the feeling in a couple of my fingers.

I've looked up schematics of the hand, to see where the main nerves are, and the lump is right where one should be. I'm convinced this little bugger has attatched itself to it, there's certainly more pain than there should be.

Then is,nt it a case of slowly cuting around the suspected glass to free it while making sure what you cut is not a nerve followed by quarterising the wound with something hot?

Yer if you go in with a gaping wound from failed self surgery I think they might bump you up a bit from months to hours/days.

I've got one hand to work with, which has made it extremely difficult. I had Noriko applying pressure to force the lump up through the slit I cut (about 1cm long) and it wasn't enough. To completely expose it I'd have to cut another slit at 90 degrees across the first and probably make both slits longer, and I'm not really happy to do that if the fecker is attatched to a nerve anyway and it all turns out to be fruitless.
If somebody who maybe knows what he's talking about (Stinkwheel) tells me it can be pulled from the nerve without damaging it I'll go ahead.

What would you be expecting to see, a gaping wound? It's a 1cm slit, it looks about as impressive as a grazed knee. Laughing

I have no idea if it will do any good or not but that is the fun of amateur surgery, give it a go and see what happens.
When I had my vascectomy I was very suprised when they set my bolloxs on fire and they actualy knew what they were doing.

mattsprattuk got it right - home surgery isnt a very good idea. Even if you were an expert and knew exactly what you were doing, doing it one handed whilst in pain, with poor lighting, without the correct tools and in "dirty" (i.e. not sterile) conditions, well, lets just say that it's not likely to result in a perfect outcome every time. There are better ways of having it done.

Can you be sure that it isn't attached to a nerve? It's not likely (though a nerve may be very close by and get damaged in your attempt anyway), but no, no-one sensible is likely to give you that kind of reassurance without seeing it (or at all, if (s)he thought you would take that as a green light to have a go at hacking it out yourself).

See someone who can do it properly for you (either on the NHS, or even privately if you think that the NHS is so bad).

I'm pretty sure that dmahon is a surgeon, so knows what he is talking about.

Something else worth thinking about, is that you have a lot of tendons for your fingers on the back of your hand, so chopping about with a knife, is probably a bad idea.

Do you often enter threads, only to make daft comments on what someone has been said ?

Looks like it.

It's not obvious to half the people in this thread that home surgery is a bad idea, and not everyone knows that dmahon is a surgeon, so my input was only obvious, if you agree with me, and knew what I do. Not everybody does.

White spirit, craft knife/scalpel tweezers, ice, super glue, tape and some courage.

it is the glass you want out, the glass will be above the nerve, if it is anywhere near the nerve in the frist place, the cyst will protect the nerve and surround the glass. Cut through the cyst untill you feel the blade grind on the glass, use tweezers to get glass out, contents of cyst more than likely will come out with glass or some pressure, leaving cyst sack, if it is attached, in the hand. this will then go a bit manky, but another slice a week later will clear that up. Then the remaining bits of cyst will be absorbed back into hand.
Done loads of times with glass, wood, metal, stones etc embedded in all areas, knees, hands, legs, shoulders etc. The glass in the thumb muscle bled for a few days, but strapping a tampax to the wound stopped the mess.
White spirit to clean things, super glue to stitch things up. Thumbs Up

Don't use white spirits, use ethanol.

I used brandy, and that smarted too.

I put a bandaid on it last night, which got soaked overnight in blood and plasma, all over the sheet as well. Now it's just leaking a steady stream of plasma. I might have another go at it later as the slit hasn't scabbed over or healed in any way yet. I might put a rockery in too, maybe a small pond and a nice paved path and stuff.

Save all the plasma in a jar, when you have enough you could DIY yourself a TV.
