https://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/3835747.stm

Apparantly road deaths were up by 2% last year, despite overall casualty figures falling. According to these figures its an increase in biker deaths thats caused this rise.

Quote:
ROAD DEATHS IN 2003
Motorcyclists: 693 deaths - a 14% rise from 2002
Car users: 1,769 deaths - a 1% increase
Pedestrians: 774 killed - no significant change
Children: 171 fatalities - a 4% fall from 2002
Pedal cyclists: 114 deaths - a 12% drop

Its not all bad tho, there is at least one person speaking some sense:

Quote:
Mary Williams, chief executive of Brake, blamed "woeful" under-funding by the government for more than 10 deaths a day on Britain's roads.

"There is far too little money spent on traffic policing, road safety TV advertising and engineering measures," she said.

"The horrendous loss of life should make road safety a political priority but instead it is always on the back burner with lots of rhetoric but far too little funding.

More drivers / riders + shite roads = More deaths

Sad but simple arithmetic.

Deaths per biker miles is probably down as there are more bikers on the road so in a way it is safer, but there is no way of disguising a 14% increase.

Hi

Well, now we know why they came out with the speed camera report last week. Trying to bury the deaths with some dodgy feel good survey.

All the best

I'm sure the government wastes our money, not only do they get 75% of our fuel prices, a road tax from everybody who uses the road and the amount of fines they dish out, it seems nothing gets put back in!!!

Overall we have just about the safest roads in the world, yet one of the highest pedestrian death rates in Europe and around 80% of pedestrians are killed in accidents that are their own fault. They are aiming at the wrong target for reducing casualties.

All the best

Local authorities are responsible for repairing the roads, the government gives them a budget out of which all highway related matters are drawn. This unfortunately includes claims against the Highway dept for damage caused to road users and vehicles. The budget is based on a national average, once all the street lighting and street cleaning including gritting during winter, general maintenance has been paid for (paid a year in arrears) they then take out the money for the road building and surfacing programme.
Whats left pays the wages of road workers employed directly by the local authority (surveyors and emergency crews) and emergency repairs. If the only claims against this budget were genuine it could cope however more and more fraudulent claims are being made each year which robs the local authorities ability to repair the roads properly because they do not have the funds, this leads to poorer quality repairs which do not last. So next year the budget has to pay for last years poor repairs which have failed again plus this years repairs! As you can see it's a snowball effect, the eventual outcome is poor quality roads and more accidents and more claims (genuine) plus the freeloaders in cars that send in bills for tyres and mechanical parts that were damaged in a pothole they may have spotted on the other side of the road! For your average car user a pothole just means the cd jumps, for us it could mean a bad accident Sad
Just as a footnote, your local authority is not legally obliged to fix a pothole untill it becomes more than 100mm deep! Sorry this is long winded but i gives you an idea who really is responsible for the state of our roads and ultimately the accidents caused by them.

How many of those Motorcyclist Fatalities were caused by Cars?

I bet a Majority of them were, and the rest were either rider error.

Car drivers should have to take more stringent tests and more often if you ask me, as there driving a lethal weapon after all.

General figure over the years is that 2/3 of car / bike accidents are the car drivers fault. However when you factor in the increasing number of single vehicle accidents then you can be certain that the majority are the riders fault.

All the best

a man on a ducati died when he came off the a22 at great speed and lost grip on the roundabout resulting in him going through the railings.

I think this is a great example of taking extreme risks, in which he ended up killing himself

BE SAFE OUT THERE

[RANT]
yeah but the council has a bottomless pit when it comes to putting in crappy road norrowing schemes, humps, painting the road red (at least it hides the blood Twisted Evil ) and all the other rubbish they are inventing to make roads unbearable!!!

Perhaps if they stopped wasting money and used all that cash on actually fixing the roads then there wouldn't be soo many claims[/RANT]
