Unless the gear box oil is separate from the engine oil as on a car Etc. just use a good quality 4stroke oil of the correct viscosity 10w/30, 10w/40, sea30 sae90 Etc.

If you check the back of the bottle you will see a list of specs. saying that the oil meets or exceeds all these.

I look for just a couple that I know
A1/B1
A2/B2
A3/B3

this is all mixed in amongst other letters A1/B1 is the minimum standard, A3/B3 is the higher

yes mate 4t 10 40 oil is fine for your engine.... the differance is that your 2t oil is burnt off in your combustion chamber n used up... but your engine 4t oil just sits in the crank case and lubes up your engine Very Happy

He understands that, he wants to know if he can use 10W40 in his transmission rather than gear oil.

No... he didn't ask the difference between 2t and 4t oil, which is what you've answered.

Tbh for the sake of a couple of quid I'd just get some proper gear oil Sean, I think the gear oil has different properties, and is designed to cope with the stresses of a gearbox Smile

Back to basics,

four stroke oil is gear oil that has a good resistance to petrol wash,

I don`t think any of us are being stupid we just read the labels differently.
I read the specs on the back not the advert on the front
