Say you are on a dual carriageway and you are in the left lane then you come to some traffic lights, there are quite a few cars in your lane but in the next lane there are none, when on a test should you go in the empty lane and when the lights go green use your bikes accelleration to get in front of traffic ( without breaking speed limits and with doing all your visual checks of course ) of the original lane you were in. My examiner says you should, and if you don't it could mean a minor fault ???

Has anyone had this happen when on there test ?

I dont see any reason for staying in the lane as a fault nor should you get a fault for going out in the other lane if you do so safely and you are allowed to go straight ahead. If the examiner gets left behind then thats his problem tbh.

I was taught to stay put though, you are less likely to do something wrong when sitting in a queue lol.

I got it slightly wrong in my post its not my examiner who says it, its the bloke who's teaching me that says it Embarassed , he says its about making progress, but i am with you Claire, there's less things to go wrong and you waste a bit of test time, if you stay in the queue.

On your test I wouldnt recommend it, you could get away with it no problem but its better to waste some time lol

I think the idea of riding is to make progress- within reason though. Its when you are over hesitant thats when they get you for it but you cant help sitting in a queue lol

Try and think ahead as well- if the dual carriageway has to merge in then its best to be prepared ahead and get in the correct lane Smile

Good luck for when you do your test Smile

Although if both lanes are 'go straight' lanes, you are hesitating perhaps if you sit in one long queue when there is an entire free lane.
Perhaps using full acceleration to make it easier to merge?

"Make progress where you can". If both lanes are straight ahead and there is traffic in the left lane but none in the right you should move into the right lane. Otherwise you could get a minor for "failure to make progress". Doing this also demonstrates good observation and anticipation which will tend to make them look favourably on your ride as a whole.

But only if there is enough room to change lanes in plenty of time with appropriate observations. Otherwise you risk a major fault.
