Getting BT landline installed cheap as possible?

Girlfriend and I have moved into a different flat, long and short it needs the line connecting at the exchange. Problematically after phoning BT, that will be £125, via post office it's £107.
I'v been searching around for ages trying to find a deal for taking up broadband and landline with the supplier if they'll subsidise the connection.
So far BT will if you take out home vision calls and broadband, totaling about £60/month after the first few, on 18 month contract.
Or TalkTalk which is free connection, line rental and BB for about £17/month. But 18 months again. Seems tempting but after reading reviews that werent that great, then phoning up to be answered by an indian call centre i'm quite unsure.
Anyone in the knowledge of any decent deals going round at the moment?
Cant do sky by the way as i did that last year...

I'm on TalkTalk and it does what it says on the tin 99% of the time (I get the very occasional downtime). I keep up on the packages from all providers and there are still none to beat it for the money/service ratio.

Think on TalkTalk you'll need a BT line, which will cost you the normal fee.

From looking this up on moneysaving expert, the cheapest way if you don't have a BT line is Virgin cable broadband. Can't remember the exact figures now, but it was much cheaper than getting the line turned on from BT.

I do believe TalkTalk brought out Tiscali who brought out Pipex, and since TalkTalk have taken over, my connection has been absolutely terrible, during peak times we can't do anything, websites take forever to load, it takes about 40 minutes to stream a video on youtube.

This could all be on how far away we are from the exchange, but personally I'd go with Virgin's cable broadband, my cousin had it and it was really good.

I and others l know have had lots of problems with BT broadband really shit customer service and the ADSL would radomly drop out a few times a day for up to an hour, changed over to Orange which gave me free broadband and a desent wireless router with my phone contract no problems at all.

Was going to go with Virgins fiberoptic broadband but have heard they have a monthly download limt?

First check if your local exchange is unbundled (LLU). That means 3rd party equipment can be used at the exchange. You still have the same copper wire to the exchange but from there it's independent of the BT network. This means you don't pay BT line rental, you pay whoever provides your service.

Generally these are cheaper than BT.

I'm looking at plus.net as the line rental is cheaper and their phone and broadband packages are ok for my needs. Last time I looked BT actually bought out Plus, so it's competing with itself.

For the broadband side you want to check your monthly allowance (Gb download etc.) and also the throttling that they put on (certain times of day limit your line speed). This is usually 2pm to 10pm for the worst times. The plus site has their figures. You may or may not be able to compare these easily with other providers, depends how they present the numbers (each one will show it's the best!)

FWIW I heard Tiscali (now owned by talktalk) were really bad for throttling.

Word of warning with Virgin 50mb Cable, it is good when it works and there aren't any limits, however we (flat) have had some times when it was running very slowly... this was a couple of weeks ago when the weather was quite bad and that is the only thing that I can think of as it is running fine now. At the time I had a look around and it seemed to be a common problem, maybe they fixed it or it was obscurely related to the weather, but as a student electronic engineer I can't see why it should effect it so greatly.

Unfortunately there's no cable access round here, otherwise i'd probably be going for that.
It would appear I got the talktalk offer slightly wrong, it's not free phoneline setup, it's free connection to their broadband service...
So would be £60 to go with them, then £17 on an 18 month contract. Harsh amount of time imo but only one that seems possible.

Unless you can get cable, then the rest will require a BT line or old BT line to be running to the house.
If there is not one, as you have found it will cost.

Ive just moved into a new flat and im in the same boat. My phone line is disconnected. So i went on the website and it seems im gonna be paying over £100 for reconnect!? How is this possible??
I haven't even got broadband yet so this seems a little steep.

FWIW Plus have an offer for new phone line connection for £50 + one of their packages.
Offer has been extended to end of January 2010.

Apparantly their home phone service has no contract and a 10 day notice period.
That has to be better than signing up to BT for 18 months

I've recently signed up with talk talk for the phone/internet package and was told it would be a £59 connection charge.
I then saw that BT was still offering free connection but not really advertising it. So I phoned talk talk back to say that I wanted to cancel my order and they put me through to there customer retention department who said they'd match the free installation offer BT was offering.
I'm pretty sure they do this for anybody so long as BT still have there offer on.

Well after doing more and more looking it would appear the talk talk one is still going to be the most cost effective in the short/long term.
That plus net one seemed pretty good, until you look more in to it.
Which is what I did and am currently talking to some rep over their chat thing.
The breakdown of it is-
Line rental of roughly £10
80gb limit broadband for £12 for 3 month then about £20/month
So you're talking about £30 per month for that.
Might try out that sign up with talktalk then attempt to cancel game
