Our cat was hit by a car on Thursday and the driver didn't stop, it is possible that they didn't realise but it got me thinking as to whether most would stop or not.

Fortunately, the car behind took him to the vets and he has a broken jaw ligament, bruised back legs and that's about it. Lucky little git cost me a fortune, so I might actually get pet insurance for them both from now on.

If the driver did know she/he hit him then may the fleas of a thousand camels infest their gentials and their arms shrink until they are unable to scratch.

I hit a cat in the van a few days back. I didnt stop. Came back along the road about 10 mins later and it was dragging itself along the road with its front legs.

A few months ago I was behind a guy in a car who hit a cat, he must have known it was there as he swerved slightly but the cat hit the side of the car and glanced off (admittedly there was not a lot he could have done as the stupid little fucker came absolutely tonning it out of a hedge and sort of ran under the wheels!) He didn't stop but me and the bloke behind did, we moved the cat to the pavement. It was only a little thing, not much more than a kitten.

It was laying there bleeding from the mouth and seemed pretty dazed.

After knocking on a few doors we found the owner who was a no-nonsense Lancashire farmer type. All she said was "Looks like there's not a lot we can do for this one, the other one's just had its leg off, they'll never bloody learn!"

After telling the owner we departed, I was pretty shaken up though. I love cats. I hope it did survive, maybe it was just concussed and had a few teeth missing or something but I don't hold out much hope.

It totally depends on lots of things. The time of day, the weather, whether or not I saw what I hit...

So if it was daylight, the weather was dry and I saw I hit what was potentially someone's pet, it is likely I would stop and assess the damage.

Oh and it also depends where I was when I hit it. It's not as if I have a lot of knowledge as to where to take a squished animal...especially in a strange town.

On our way out with the family for my Mum's birthday and a car in front hit a cat and then the next car along just drove over the top of it (not on it). We stopped, I jumped out and wrapped it up in blanket and dashed to Vet who then refused to treat it as he wanted to know who was going to pay. I thought my mild mannered septugenarian mother was going to hit him. She demanded he treat the cat and I thought she was going to use his ar$e to swipe her credit card

It all looked dreadful, as the cat had bitten it's tongue and there was blood everywhere but he was ok and the owners were very grateful and picked up the bill.

I did hit a cat on the lane - it was dark and raining and I stopped but couldn't find it. It was likely to be a feral up here but I went back and searched all the hedges and ditches the next morning as soon as it was light. No sign so it was either ok or picked off by something else.

Even if you're not a fan of an animal, there is no need to leave it to suffer - if it's a wild animal and beyond saving then it should be dispatched as swiftly and humanely as possible. Otherwise if it's a pet or you can handle it safely get it to a Vet pronto and worry about finding the owner once it's in safe hands.

Yes, purely on the fact when my cat was run over he was left in the road, he managed to crawl down the street and meowl his bollocks off at the door. it had broken his pelvis and he had to have his tail removed, it hasn't effected his balance, although when it's cold he does walk like he's been shagged by a dog, and he runs lop-sided...

And it's not as if you couldn't see him as he's bright white and ginger and the size of a staffy...Wankers...

Yeah I'd stop I'm not a fan of cats but wouldn't be happy knowing I'd damaged one plus the thought of some kid going looking for their beloved pet (named lucky obviously everyone I know who has had a pet called lucky ended up under a car) and finding a big furry pizza in the road doesn't do much for my conscience I'm a nice bloke really honest

Sorry to hear about your cat,

Ours managed to fall 20ft from the bathroom window and land face first on a bike trailer below the window last month luckly she only lost a front tooth and was left with a sore mouth though the bugger refused to eat for 2 weeks after and l had to force feed her blended kitten food with a syringe 6 times a day.

I would stop and see if it had a collar with the owners number on to ring them, if not then i would get back in and drive on.

Its not a drivers fault that someones pet is in the road. I can see the point in people letting their cats out cos they dont want a fat lazy cat but my dog would be a lot healthier if he was out all day. Doesn't mean i am going to let him out all day though.

Not having a dig at cat owners but to be fair i think the collar thing is acceptable, if people cant be arsed even trying to make the pet they leave out all day identifiable then they cant moan when people do cock all.

So to cap off, i would stop and check the collar, no tag means no help. I aint going to spend my time taking a cat to a vet for someone that isnt looking after it, if you catch my drift.

You don't have to stop for cats by law but I think it's the decent thing to do. I'd check for a name tag and drop it off at the vets. I'm not a cat lover but I do have one and understand that it's owners probably love it.

Fair point keith, but i still wouldn't change my day because someones pet was in the road. Not trying to be callous even though it sounds that way.

Its just my viewpoint, if someone spends money on a pet because they want it, its their responsibility to keep it fed, safe, looked after and sort its vets appointments, not mine.

Roads are roads and cats dont pay tax.
