CBR 900 Headlight fuse keeps blowing

Hey hey,

I knew I had a reg/rec issue as my battery was undercharging. A mate gave me an old one of his and all was well for a few months.

Yesterday, my headlight fuse went. Pulled over, changed it and it went again 30 seconds later. I put it down to a shoddier reg/rec that my mate gave me and it putting out too much voltage as opposed to my under charging one.

Limped the bike home and put my old reg/rec back on and changed the fuse again. Do you know where this story is heading? The fuse blew again!

I have bitten the bullet and ordered a shiny new reg/rec and have googled the issue. There seems to be 2 sides to my coin - either it is the reg/rec or it is a short.

Could a short cause this? Before the fuse blows, the bulbs get brighter so there is definitely a surge in volts but could 2 different reg/rec's have the same problem?

Hi Minty,
It sounds like it could be an earthing problem to me. Check and clean all of your earth contacts before you start throwing any more money at it.

Raffles, you rock, sir.

Had a look at the wiring behind the clocks and the earth link wire that travels between the 2 bulbs has worn on some metalwork.

Always one of the first things to check when fuses start going more than once,
dead shorts, most likely to happen around headstock area as cables are pulled threw and moved around there alot..

I did check those ones as a matter of course. This wire though, just links the earth from one bulb to the other and shouldnt move as it was behind the clocks. It does travel through the metalwork that holds the clocks in place though. It has taken 12 years to wear it through, so not bad.
