bike is now refusing to start and run.
i know that oil is getting into my cylinder and being burnt and it is causing one of my spark plugs to become oily and not work. i'm at uni 120 miles away from my dad's garage where he has all the necessary tools for me to get to the valves/rings.
any chance that if i change the spark plugs it will make it home? its all motorway so bike will be at high revs all the time.

As long as the plug isn't worn, just give it a good clean, use a little petrol to clean it if needs be. As long as you keep the engine running, you should be ok getting home but watch for excessive smoke coming from the exhaust and be prepared to top up the oil if needs be.

Oh and don't thrash the bike too much, you may make the problem worse but you might need to give it a little bit of a thrash from time to time just to burn off the oil.

Given that 6K is legal limit on a D6 you should be OK.

If its burning oil, i would be avoiding high rev's from the point of view that it will burn even more and could risk a major blow on the M'Way.

You would have to using one hell of a lot of oil to foul clean plugs over 120 miles. And divvys are not known for their excessive oil usage.

Check the air box. Its not got a load of oil in it ??? Known problem Thumbs Up

checked the airbox and there is a slight amount of oil in there. not enough to make any pools or anything, just enough to see a slight film on say half the bottom of the airbox. i can't think of any reason this would be causing a problem seems fairly normal over a long period of time.

after cleaning the spark plugs and putting them back in i managed to make it 5mins down the road before it completely cut out again. i had it running on 3 cylinders back from Birmingham the other day so i think i will replace the one where it isn't leaking and try again see how far i get.

what is the known issue with divvys by the way?

The know issue is oil in the airbox.
It gets sucked in via the small breather on the rocker cover when the crankcase breater gets bunged up with stuff.

If you bike is parked on side stand a lot you may notice that you get it dripping out of the drain pipe which exits just behind/below the rear brake cylinder.

You sure its not a HT lead or plug issue ?

yes. am very sure.
the bike is going through a lot of oil. have to top it up every 3-4 fill ups. even more regular when i've been doing short trips. there is also a lot of white smoke at start up that does disappear after 30seconds or so. one of the plugs is also black and wet when i took it out. when i swapped the plug over between cylinders 3 and 4 and cleaned up the oily plug it rans fine for a two minute ride into uni. died literally the second i pulled up and didn't start after that. took the plug out and cylinder number 3 was covered wet and black. meant i did have to push the bike back home all uphill in the pouring rain. which wasn't fun.
consulted the haynes and the forum a few months back to ask for advice and was all things seemed to point to leaking valve seals. just haven't had a chance to fix it as of yet. needed to wait until i get back from uni into a garage where i have all the tools. not just a hammer, duct tape, a few sockets and screwdrivers.

Sounds like a worn valve stem and guide.

Also possible a faulty oild control ring.

+1

Valve stem seals I reckon. If you're mechanically adept and you have the tools, it's not very expensive to sort out though it is a little time consuming... Given how cheap the seals are, it's good practice to replace all of them. If you're not good mechanically, get someone else or a garage to do it because it's a fairly difficult job.
