getting a new pc

my pc is pretty old and ragged now, also its in my brother room so not easily accessible.

the laptop im on now just doesnt cut it for games that have been made in the last few years.

been a while since iv'e bought a pc and a lot of the info i used to measure a pc's performance is rather outdated. taken a quick look on ebay and have seen these.

any of these good for modern games?, any suggestions on what to look for? only looking for a tower as i have all the other bits and bobs.

All three of those are old bits of cack. The still have AGP capability, which shows how old the motherboards are. The real give away is the price. No, you won't be able to play games on them (decent modern 3D ones), or at least not at any setting higher than ultra-low everything.

If you want a good solid gaming rig the only way to go is by buying your own components and building it yourself.

I stick with Intel and Nvidia,

I assume you aren;t spenting mega buck so you want a 2.6 Quad or a 3.0ghz dual core.

I have an Q6400 (2.6 quad) in my rig and it is an excellent proccessor I have at it running at 3.6 underwater. I think most gamers go for the dual core version though.

You want a nvidia 9800 card IMo they are the perfect balance of cost/performance.

You then want a motherboard that is compatible, maybe consider getting an SLI board if you can afford it that way you can an another graphics card. Once it starts showing it's age.

Don't skimp on the RAM on PSU cheap of either is false ecomony get a decent quiet PSU and get some high speed 'performance' RAM. I would say either 2x2gb or 4x1gb depending on the price. I think 4 lots of 1 will give better performance but obviously can be upgraded.

HDD personally I would get 2(or4) small faster HDDs maybe 160 or 250gb then raid them (Check the mobo has a raid controller) then buy a 1tb drive for all your data storage.

Buying an afermarket cooler for the CPU is probably a good bet too, especially if you consider overclocking It's not difficult to get 3ghz on a Q6400 under air with decent ram.

Haha I just looked at the links and they are under £200, the above info isn't relivant as the proccessor and ram I have suggested will set you back more than those PCs.

It's not exactly taxing TBF, everything is colour coded, and can usually do in one way. It's not even like you have to bugger about with jumpers anymore.

Building your own is probably the cheapest option and isnt difficult to do.

Whilst building from scratch is fun, I don't know if it's always cheapest... and if you don't have the knowledge you can scrap some pricey components (remembering the time I managed to chip a new processor when I (mis)installed the fan owch)

I like the third link as a fixer-upper - dirt cheap with nice dual cores already there and you can load up extra RAM and a nice shiny graphics card dead easy. Buy new HDDs when you've got the cash to spare cos you'll run through 80GB in no time..

Another way is to go to a site where you can customise according to your needs and budget - I used ginger6 and kept tweaking until i balanced performance against budget Budget won alas...

You can always upgrade later if you get a decent base to work from - mobo and processors. Most of my desktops have gone through two or three generations of upgrades before I've replaced them. (Also great for scavenging...)

I'd want a decent dual core AMD or Intel = no diff, but AMD is generally cheaper. Look for guides on gaming on a budget to find a mid-to-high mobo. 4GB of RAM is nice of course, some types are better than others for gaming tho I don't know which. Decent nVidia graphics card - plenty to choose from to suit your budget, although the high end ones are so tempting... and cost as much as my entire system... Coupla hard drives, and you're away.

Read reviews of the important components to check for known issues. You'll soon be geeking it up
