This is Staffordshire wrote:
The Body of a motorcyclist from North Staffordshire has been discovered in a secluded roadside ditch more than a fortnight after his high-powered machine crashed down an embankment. The body of the 33-year-old man, who is believed to be from the Leek area, was discovered after a passer-by spotted his abandoned motorcycle in a remote spot bordering the eastbound carriageway of the A50, outside Uttoxeter.

The grim discovery was made on Tuesday after a passer-by led police back to the scene.

Police believe the driver plunged to his death after his machine careered off the A50 on the evening of Sunday, June 6, when he was last seen by friends and relatives.

A post mortem examination has been carried out by a Home Office pathologist to establish the exact cause of death. But police believe his injuries were consistent with him dying at the scene of the crash, which happened in countryside between Sudbury and Foston.

The body of the rider, who had not been reported missing, was found in thick undergrowth about 20 metres from his silver and orange 1300 Suzuki machine.

A spokesman said: "We are appealing for witnesses who can help us track events leading to the collision, which happened on the eastbound carriageway, half a mile on the Sudbury side of Foston village. The man was wearing jeans and a T-shirt and a very brightly coloured crash helmet and would have looked very distinctive."

Not nice. Not nice at all.

If i recall that is like a year old, but anyway i think what they might be trying to say is he either lumped off his bike and starved/dessicated in a ditch cos he couldnt move away from his buggered bike, and no help came.

Either that or he got knocked off by someone off his bike, then they knocked him off completely to not get caught...

Oh and as for his friends not saying he was missing, i imagine they did, but if you say right im off for a ride, you could be gone usually about 3-4 hours (or at least i can) and cover some serious ground, and true whilst i dislike going down country lanes for that reason, a lot of it will be countbry lanes. The A507 is a favourite for it, you see skid marks leading off the road, up the curb and away.

But still, poor sod.

Yeh there was a similar story a while ago, some corpse of a biker found in a bush, had been there a month or something and their was a big backlash cos the police hadnt found it or something.

oh and jamez, it says in the article, injuries sustained from crash arent what killed him. So he either died in the ditch or was knobbled.

there was a similar one in southampton last year, the guys body was found under some crash barriers...he was only spotted when somebody stuck in rush hour traffic was sat next to his body (his bandit was in ahedge on the other side)...the reckoned he had been there 5 hours or so.

turned out to be a hit and run as well.

Bad news to hear, but no offence to him etc etc.. but if he was wearing full leathers, boots, gloves etc he /might/ have survived. Theres noting he can do about it now, but we can... everyone wear decent leathers! They will save your life! (hopefully!)

Hi

Not nice, and some of us went down that section of road on the way back from Cadwell the week afterwards. To be honest I am surprised nobody saw it for 2~3 weeks. It is a reasonably busy road and fairly open and straight. That section they mention is quite short and has a laybye in it that is used by trucks (high up so a good view).

As to his riding gear, it might have made a difference. However quite likely not and it was his choice.

All the best

Keith

It could have made a difference though, it was his choice yes but all I'm saying is we all have the choice too, just don't make the wrong choice Confused !

Each to their own but I don't see the point in not wearing protective clothing unless I am literally only riding to the bottom of my road to the co-op. (even then I could get knocked off and hurt/killed but it's a calculated risk, going fast/far/traffic etc is a higher risk etc)

Sounds nasty. :/

As Keith said, I don't think that the gear he was wearing really played a big part. Leather saves your skin, you can still as easily break your neck or smash your head when crashing.

Because he fell down an embankment I suspect he was killed by hitting various sharp objects or snapping his head backwards rather than road rash.

YamsR6 wrote:

You're not in a position to say whether it's the wrong or right choice.

It's up to the person, if they want to ride in nothing but a t-shirt and some flip flops then that's up to them, it's the right choice for them. I couldn't care less what people wear when riding, if someone asks for advice I'll give it but otherwise I'll just shut up!

There is a right and wrong choice to be honest, but it's not always "right" for everyone in their opinon.

Leathers = no/not much road rash, more protection from hitting things/cuts etc = right! (or best)

No leathers = roadrash/cuts - blood loss, less protecting you from hits - wrong (or worst)

Even the people who ride in t-shirts, fine it's up to them I don't really care! but it's still the wrong choice just the same as car drivers that don't wear a seatbelt.

But what about the doctors/nurses/paramedics who have increased work to do by spending time/money/resources removing gravel from people's skins, and the people who need to clean the blood from the street, the after-care of gravel rash wounds and so on and so on.

IMO leathers should be a legal requirement, just like helmets.

At the very least it shows bikers are responsible!

Whether riding without leathers is right or wrong, either way it's still irresponsible and thoughtless, even if no one cares what other people chose to wear when riding!

Not sure whether to split this off to another thread.

Anyway, it is only over the last couple of years that full leathers have become popular in the UK (go back 15 years and it was rare to see someone in full leathers). Maybe cost (leathers have got substantially cheaper, even ignoring inflation), maybe it is fashion.

Go to other countries and bike gear is far less likely to be used. Helmets were not a legal requirement in Italy until the late 1980s on motorbikes, and far later on mopeds (and I think they are still not required in Belgium on mopeds). French motorway coppers on bikes ride in short slieved shirts with normal trousers.

Yes leathers do protect you should you have an accident. However they don't protect you half as well as not having an accident in the first place and they also increase your sense of invulnarability. This is similar to seat belts in cars, which are now widely credited with making next to no difference to passenger death rates when they were made compulsory, but pedestrian and cyclist deaths noticeably increased at the same time. Most people do things to a level of perceived risk. Reduce the perceived risk and they will compensate in other ways, maybe by trying to get round a corner faster, maybe by paying less attention to the road.

All the best

Keith

I do agree with you there Thumbs Up

But you do get people in next to no gear, still taking risks and going fast etc.

Also I'd rather go a bit faster, take more risks, and crash in full leathers, than I would fall off at 30mph with no leathers on.

I guess it comes down to who can face up to having their skin scrubbed clear of gravel, and who can't.

You could ride for years with no leathers, and never have an accident, you could ride for 1 day in full protective gear, crash and kill yourself.

Like you say it is a risk, but leathers do minmise it (in a way)

This is a long and difficult subject, no one really is right or wrong and no one will "win" this, there are "reasons" for and against people who ride with no leathers... and it does come down to personal preference, so I'm happy to leave it at that I think before this gets moved to f&fw Laughing

Funny this should come up.

I was just talking on IRC last night about registering a mobile phone with a mobile phone tracking service, and carrying it onboard, so that friends/relatives could figure out where you were, if youre late and the tracker says youre 20m west of a country road, not moving.
