It's talking about the massive over population of the world. Watch it on iPlayer if you can. It's very interesting. The fact that medical advances are keeping people alive, means VERY soon the planet will be vastly over populated and in serious trouble.

There are almost 7 billion people on earth today. And in a few years time this will leap to 10 billion, thanks to all the teenagers in the world doing what comes naturally, and producing more babies.

More babies equal population growth and a big squeeze on the worlds already stretched resources.

Food for thought! Shocked

I remeber when I was in Year 8 my geography teacher told me the world could never become overpopulated.....

Apparently as demand rose it would force new tech to be invented and used to ever "sustain" a growing population.

Anyone can see that this is simply not the case....

Horizon? , Horizon is propaganda they always show we're gonna die type programmes all the time.

The earth can actually support quite a lot more people but there lacks the political and moral will to do so as well as the gross misallocation of resources. And fear of tech there are limits but they are low because of the above because we squander what we have now. If we stopped squandering and cooperating we could boost this limit massively. Imagine if we scrapped all the armies of the world we would have trillions of pounds to build things with.

The typified american driving a 3ton SUV is a gross waste of energy which can be used in building other things, I bet with the energy used in their 1mpg SUVs I could fashion a crude solar mirror type thing.

Technology has the resources today, we can put nuclear power everywhere but people don't like that, we could cover the worthless land of the Sahel, Inner mongolia Saudi and Northern Africa and anything in between the tropic of Capricorn and cancer with solar power towers (I mean where they use mirrors to reflect light onto a black water tank to generate steam) as per

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PS10_solar_power_tower

The Sahara / Saudi desert/ Kazakhstan is absolutely worthless, but the Arabs won't want to build over the Garden of Allah as they call it.

Food? -> GM foods and hydroponics, things such as vat grown meat or algae which is made edible and the tech exists now but costs more than conventional meat or simply make people vegetarians.

Need more land? , start putting people into ultra high rise towers.

Reclaim land, reverse Osmosis of water,

Once you get to a certain stage you can build a massive coil gun somewhere like Siberia where the land is worthless to stick things in orbit for a lower cost, perhaps space based mirrors to bring light and thus energy to parts of the earth that are dark.

Unfortunately such cooperation would mean one world government and a fascist execute anybody who steps out of line type government. Something which mirrors China, i.e in China internally they can get things done quickly its just bad if you are the one who gets stepped on to build their projects.

The earth can support much greater numbers than we have at the moment.

Our tiny island supports more than 60 million people. The only obstacle for supporting greater numbers of people, is development, and countries being well run or not.

The developed world, if anything, has a shortage of new people, as we have an ageing population. Those in work have to support ever larger numbers who are older than working age.

It's particularly bad in Japan, as they allow very little immigration, and the corporate rat race consumerism society, makes for low birth rates. They may face a drop in population, let alone the cost of supporting an ageing population.

Does it really though? I mean, how much crops/meat/energy etc comes solely from the UK? How much is actually imported? I think I'm right in stating that we import far more than we produce ourselves, so if we are talking in terms of self-sustainment, then the UK would go to shit in a very short amount of time.

So it's not so much our island supports more than 60 million people, rather, we have 60 million people here and are able to sustain them (questionable) via the use of the rest of the worlds resources. But for sure, these are in finite supply.

theres so much empty space barely being used, theres so much empty land in this country, for instance the highlands which is sparesly populated.

doubt the world will become too overpopulated before we sod off into space first or a huge war.

it will sort itself out somehow

Hi

Don't think food wise the UK can really support itself in any style now. And too much of the country has now become unpleasantly overcrowded.

All the best

According to the program, if all the world's annual resources were shared equally between each human being there'd be two 'Global Hectares' each (the unit of measurement they use).

Currently the average African has 0.8. The average Indian has 1.2. The average Chinese has 2.0 (bang on). The average Brit has 4.4. The average european has 3.2. And the average Yank has 9.4.

If every human had 2.0 there would currently be enough to sustain 13 billion people. But that output (current output) is non-sustainable in the long-term. The damage already being done to maintain it is approaching critical (sea stocks, de-forestation, etc).

For everyone to have the current UK standard of living, sustainably, the earth's population should be no more than 1.9 billion.

Some of the figures I've quoted may be off a bit, I'm going from memory. But only a bit.

Nature is good at forcing a balance when things become untenable. War, disease and/or famine, something will happen to put a stop to the human madness. But that's ok, because all those who die, only a small percentage will be able to be re-born into a drastically reduced population. Yay, mega time off! Thumbs Up Very Happy

I hear you on that one, but really those observations are made from the animal kingdom, who don't have the capacity to, say, develop antibiotics against the diseases which they catch..... take smallpox, left unhindered that would have done a pretty damn good job of it.

As for famine.....GM foods maybe?

The point I'm making is that whilst mother nature will attempt to vanquish us from the earth, we're starting to get pretty good at fighting back, so it's not going to be straight foward, and in fact this may be even worse if you think that you have death vs living in a world that cannot sustain itself and therefore having to fight for food, water, medicine and shelter.....perhaps death would be a favourable option??

That is correct. In fact according to a report on the subject a little while back, the self sustainable population for this country was around 30 million maximum.
We are thus grossly over populated in the UK, but many will still kid themselves otherwise.

The one child policy only relates to Han Chinese which make up 92% of the people in China 8% of 1.3 bn is still a hell of a lot of people.

The people who exist in China as I've said many times were bred for an infantry war that never happened, due to the massive technological gap the Chinese armies were to use tactics used at the battle of the Imjin river.

Stalin once said

"Quantity has a quality all of its own,"

27000 chinese infantry (many captured KMT 'volunteers') were tasked to rush the gloucesters , the gloucesters were massacred even though they scored 60% casulties on the Chinese infantry.

Quite probably true, but there are easy ways of doing it. First stage is educate people (and no point in coming up with a law if they aren't educated anyway), as that will lower the birth rate. Second is stop paying / subsidising people to have kids.

All the best
