Need information please (PC)

Right, I am very aware of not going mental and accepting all programmes onto my laptop, hence me not being able to download a lot of stuff others do (as I don't understand much about them etc). But at the moment I have Java Automatic Update flashing at me and hassling me to update.

What is it?
Do I need it? What for?

If I don't need it...how do I tell it to go away and stop hassling me?

java is used in some websites for games, chat clients etc.
its not adware or spyware so your safe to allow the update.
