The time has come, I must leave the world of the 125cc bike behind and being 21 naturally Direct Access would be the method of preference since the 33bhp law is somewhat....well it's damn stupid really Razz.
Unfortunately being 5ft is not the most favorable position to be in. One of the local training schools claims to have a 'lowered' ER5 for the short arses among us yet I'm dubious, not to mention lessons with these people cost over £50 a lesson (2 hours), a bit excessive yes?! And even then there are no guarantees it would be low enough Confused .
So I'm curious, for all the other 21+ tiny people out there, what did you do? Were you fortunate enough to have a quality training school or were you forced to take the 125 test?

We teach on ER5's too, we have thinner saddles which accommodate most short arses Laughing however we would never expect anyone to ride it on the road untill they were comfortable with the bike and we don't charge to sit on the thing! However the lessons are one to one and £20 per hour. My advice ....... shop around and good luck Smile

I wouldn't dismiss the 33bhp restriction so readily.

You could get an unrestricted RS125 which is just on the 33bhp limit if you do the 'normal' test. That's small but can still get up to near the ton. Should be enough for anyone who has just passed their test...

Many people haven't bothered with 33bhp including myself, it isn't exactly a law that is enforced so not much to worry about really, as far as I know nobody on this forum knows anyone that has been done for it. Save yourself some hassle and money and just do the restricted license test!

But would she be saving herself the hassle? If her insurance want to see a restriction certificate, theres the hassle of getting that, the hassle of getting the restriction removed etc etc etc.

Much better to do the full test if you can and not have to worry about poxy 33bhp things. Laughing

Whilst there is nobody checking your bikes, what you're doing by riding on a derestriced machine is invalidating your insurance. That is riding with NO INSURANCE. Next to drink driving/riding, the justice system considers that the second worst crime.

So if you do have an accident in which anybody is injured, expect the book to be thrown at you. Oh and you won't get any insurance money either...

Hi,

When I did my test there was no das but as you know I am quite short. When I got back to biking I had some lessons on a GS500 in stafford which was OK and friend who is even shorter (not quite 5') also did DAS on GS500 and now has a lowered 600 monster.

I got a GPZ 500 to start with and I can touch the floor ok and it should be the same as a ER500.

If you would like to come and try it out yell - we can go to sainsburys or somewhere and everything that sticks out is pre-scratched for you. Laughing

The Divi is taller then the GPZ but with my extra height boots I can ride that. The bandit has a lowered seat and is ok with boots.

bye
Charlotte

to do the DAS it has to be > 46bhp yes?
well clearly after doing a DAS you will be riding a >46bhp bike. so when not buy one to fit your size and use that to do your DAS?

Precisely, and I certainly don't want to be doing that! Since if I had a 'fight' with a car (for example)....I'm guessing I would lose, in which case compensation would be nice if it were due!

Can you do that?! Confused I was under the impression you needed to use one belonging to a training school due to insurance etc.

You can do DAS on your own bike. Though I'm sure the instructor would have to pick you up from your home as you couldn't ride the bike to their place without being with an instructor. Unless you could get someone to take it down and bring it back for you.

arse thats a very good point actually. i was thinking along the lines of doing the 33bhp test on your own bike. guess its not possible for the DAS.

Hi

I don't think there is any legal reason why you could not use your own bike for DAS, but with insurance and the inability to ride it to the training school for lessons it is not practical really.

To be honest you managed to ride the Mito, and you have more experience of keeping a bike upright now so I would suspect you would be OK on a GS500.

All the best

Keith

I'm sure if you spoke nicely to the instructor they may be able to start your lesson from your home.

The place where I done my DAS has this on their website...

Quote:
You can practice for your DAS practical test on any size motorcycle that exceeds the learner specification and your test must be taken on a machine of at least 46.6bhp. When training you must be accompanied at all times by an instructor and take all the usual safety precautions. This includes wearing reflective clothing and radio headsets to keep you in contact with the instructor. If you want to practice on your own machine this will require an instructor to collect you, ask for information about this service.

Laughing LMFAO! This is true, for the approximate grand total of 5 minutes I was riding that I did only drop it twice Embarassed! Haven't done that for a while, but meh, if it's 'their' bike, dropping it wouldn't really bother me (aside from the embarrassment), but I'm thinking going over on test...not good!

I didn't realise you could do it on your own, least thats something. But no, not practical at all! Could only afford the 400 I'm after by selling the other and whats the point in doing that until I can 'legally' ride the bigger one. Confused

Well, wander down and take Charlotte up on the offer of a spin on the GPZ500.

All the best

Sit yourself on the ER5, you never know you may fit. if not they can allways drop the suspension down a bit for you and put a smaller thinner seat on. seat width is ver important, every bit futher apparet you legs are, reduces how far down the can reach. 5ft is quite small, but i'm sure there are quite a few women of that size wanting to get a bike, so i'm sure the training center will be able to do something to help you

I paid £50 per 2hr lesson as well.... it's a big incentive to learn as quickly as possible! Shocked

DAS, even though you are a short arse, so are most japanese people so no doubt there is a bike there for you!

My instructor charged £15 an hour in 2002 and I only needed three lessons including the one before the test, if you are paying £50 for two hours ask him is that part finance to buy the bike off them Confused.

You should be good enough not to need many lessons and i'm sure that the bike will be short enough for your short arse!
