Don't work in computers. Its a dead industry.

Get in a big company on the bottom rung of an office job and work up from there.

Why's that exactly?

Apretecips are quite good, but the money is very poor.

Hi

As Robby says, IT is a dead industry in the UK. Development work is going abroad, which leaves testing work in the UK for now (and that would bore me to death) and some PC support work which doesn't pay much in the long term.

Personally I would say aim to get an apprenticeship to learn a skill that can only be used on site and cannot be done remotely.

All the best

Keith

Become a plumber or builder or electrician. You can never get one they are really well paid and cannot be outsourced to an offshore processing center Evil or Very Mad

Go travel the world for a year or two.

You'll learn far more than you ever would on any course, have great fun and your experience will make you all the more employable when you get back.

Don't work in Tesco's unless you really have a thing for supermarkets. They wanted to train me as a manager, and fair enough management qualifications could be good in any industry but I couldn't stand any longer in a supermarket.

Get yourself into a trade, and try and run your own, honest and hopefully entrepreneurial business in the future

Good luck Thumbs Up

get a trade

as someone else said

it can't be outsourced
you will always be needed
if you are prepared to work, be on call etc. then you can earn a fair bit

multi skill - plumber/sparks is probably best

brickies and chippies are not in the same league I don't think

Speaking from experience Flip? Laughing

Seriously though, there was a guy on tv recently, he was a university lecturer, on around £27k, had to get a plumber round one day to sort his boiler out. They got chatting about jobs and the plumber said he makes around £35k a year.

So the lecturer quit and left his degree's behind and is now a plumber!

Sounds good.
Personaly i'd do more education. The demand for a skills that are rare and usefull to companies will mean in later life, people will want and even need to employ you. High demand for skills=high wages Smile .

Theres no point in pursuing a job which you dont like, or which the market for has become saturated for. The It/computing route is one that many have taken, and is sure to be saturated, if not now in the future, hence the low wages and genral crappy positions.

I may open up my own business eventully, but im going to study more (international business studies). I recon this will mean after i finish, i can will have good career prospects. It will always come in handy.

Do somthing you will enjoy. If possible think long-term, and plan ahead.

Good luck.

everybody and their brother has a degree these days. you can either get one too and try and compete or start at the bottom and work your way up. yes it might not be glamoros, but your earning £12k per year while others are getting into debt by that much every year at uni.

Why quit a course because you THINK your work was marked incorrectly? It may have been total shit for all you know! I obviously don't know the ins and outs of your situation but you can appeal against your mark especially if you can prove you have a case.

Nowadays it is very difficult to work your way to the top, there is a lot of politics involved. I worked for O2 from 17-20 and was told that I had been earmarked for bigger and better things. But like a typical teen I twatted about now and again and got a reputation for a joker which but the anchors on any serious promotion that would have been in the pipeline.

Maybe contacting a careers advice centre would be a good place to start Thumbs Up

Speaking as someone who drifted through their life.
Teens - uni, building sites, warehouses
20's - dept store, record shop (that was all right), selling arial photos of peoples houses
30's - photographic studio, design, event management

Eventually I got together with a couple of other guys and started my own business and it was the best thing I ever did. 14 years later my partners have left and I run the whole thing myself. It has good days and bad days but it beats any job I ever had, and I know that every time I have to work really hard then I'm the one who benefits.

It's really difficult when, you are younger, to know where life will take you. My advice is to go with the flow and think about what you REALLY want to do and then set goals to get there. There are loads of jobs that people don't even realise exist, not just traditional industries you might have considered. If you want to get in to something difficult or more unusual (motorcycle journalist, photographer, web designer) then offer to work for people for nothing to get experience - you will be surprised how often this will result in a job. Think freelance and self employed, the old concept of a job and career path is long gone unless you go and work for a big corporate. Always be cheerful and co-operative, offer to do the jobs none else wants to do and do them with a smile, get to work early and leave late - bosses notice these things. Talk to your bosses, let them know what you want to achieve and it will happen. If you want to start your own business then go for it, it's not as difficult as it looks. Ask other business owners for advice, they will always give it freely.

Good luck!
