hi. im looking at getting rid of my 2000 zx6r and getting a bike i can use as a supermoto in the summer and in the winter or weekends e.c.t put the off road wheels on it.

however due to my license it needs to have paperwork to say its 33bhp.
so far i have seen

drz 400....
ccm 404 and 644
and various husaberg engines.

the bike needs to be good at doing the road riding and not need servicing every half hour. with a decent top speed aswell as all my mates have sports bikes.

hope you can point me in the right direction as i have no idea

thanks

Any bike can be restricted to 33bhp just by a throttle stop then putting it on a dyno. That is fully legitmate and legal proof. You dont need an official kit or certificate.

Most supermotos will have a fair bit of trouble keeping up with a 600 sports bike on fast A-roads. Anything with the DRZ400 engine will struggle and Hausabergs are known for being a bit more fragile than other makes.

CCM R30 and 644, KTM's and Husqvarnas are what you should be looking at.

Have never ridden either, but from what I've heard the KTM 450 and 525 are the ones to have for on/off road?

They can't be that bad. As a majority of the enduro riders seem to be using them now days?

From what I remember it's more frequent oil changes and value checks every 1000 miles for ktms.

Probably best with a drz. Get yourself a nice one and then upgrade it as you go along.

That's my plan, otherwise I'd get a husky.

Generally these bikes can be split into two categories; road/trail bikes and competition bikes.
Competition bikes will require frequent servicing, but will be very light with a sharp power delivery.
The road/trail orientated bikes have more sensible service intervals, but gain a decent chunk more weight and are physically bigger (wider, longer seat etc, wheel base and bars are generally not too far off.)

The enduro riders will generally do an oil change after every race.

Both Husky and KTM makes bikes in each category.
Competition:
KTM EXC Range, Husky TE250, TE310, TE450, TE510, All Husabergs

Street/trail:
Husky TE610, KTM LC4 Range (625,640,660,690), All CCMs (though rotax engined 604/640 are more questionable), DRZ

Getting a DRZ and upgrading it and will just leave you with an expensive slow bike, so not a route I'd suggest.
If you want a general bike that can be taken off-road and is capable on-road, I'd go for a Husky TE610 or KTM LC4 enduro model. These only weigh a little more than a DRZ, but have better suspension, more power and can swap SM wheels in easily.

thanks for the advice guys. im swayed towards the husky purely as i think it looks better.

i only do around 2000 miles a year so shouldnt need to change oil too regularly. or does it also go on engine hours or something?

Service intervals for the trail/road bikes are in miles, service intervals for the competition bikes are in hours.

The latest TE610 has 3000 mile service intervals.

Best to post it on here to give others a chance to reply and so that someone with the same questions can come back and find the previous discussions Thumbs Up.
However, if I don't reply within a day or two, drop me a PM and I'll have a look.

As I said before, all Husabergs are competition bikes, so light weight, but with harsher service intervals.

You need to put it in perspective mate:

1) you're limited to 33bhp.

2) you're doing 2000 miles a year

3) you're concerned about services etc.

Sounds to me like you want a pick up and play bike = drz400.

Sure, it's not a 'proper' supermoto, but don't let that discredit you.

I think you need to read the reports on supermotojunkie.com. you'll see that they are a fun bike to have.

Husky TE610 seems to make more sense to me - better suspension and can be derestricted at the end of 33hp for a decent lump more. Weight is similar to the S/SM models and servicing is about the same I believe.

I take it this isn't a fancy restriction kit; as I'm sure that they don't do them for Huskys.

I went for one myself till I found I couldn't get a kit - are you on about a throttle stop or sumat?

I don't know if you can pay £200 for a FI kit, but then that's always seemed a rather poor option to me anyway.
Sure if you take it to a dyno place and pay them for an hour's work, they could get something sorted.

FI don't do a kit for the husky. Seems like you need to find a dyno place that will be amicable towards you.

Go DRZ then you get to choose from loads of fancy upgrades!

If you're the sort that likes spending money for the sake of it, fair enough Wink.
Otherwise, the Husky does the vast majority of what you’d need out of the box without upgrades, unless you’re getting a bit more serious in a niche activity like adventure touring or long distance-rallies – it should be fine doing a Hare and Hounds out of the box (which so would a DRZ to be fair, but you’d probably be happier on the Husky).

If the DRZ cost a lot less, I could understand it, but second hand it doesn’t seem to be a massive amount cheaper.

my mate had a drz and i think they are garbage. why buy a average bike and spend a fortune making it decent when you can buy a good one straight away?

and dont worry about the restrictor thats a minor technicality......

im not worried about service intervals i just dont wana have to change it after every ride. i change the oil a couple of times a yerar in the zx6r anyway

i think a husky with both sets of wheels and a nice exhaust will be spot on. just need to get rid of the zx6r get a insurance quote and then get muddy!

You really don't have no idea!
I name thee dickhead. Now dickhead, go find a 33bhp supermoto that will keep up with your mates sports bikes, can swap to enduro and turns into a fucking boat too.
I now label you arsehole too!
From the combination of the two you can choose a nickname of:
Arsehead or Dickhole.
In fact, it's probably best if you stick with dickhead, as your more than likely to start a new post, as you're unable to decide as you're a fucking dickhead!
ergo, we will stick with dickhead!

This may be possibly the most mental post I've read on this site Shocked Laughing

I have a Drz400sm and i dont regret buying it at all. yeah sure it isnt a proper supermoto but if you get the bike set up well with a decent set of tires its a fantastic little bike.
work on your riding to try and get you faster instead of getting a faster bike.

imho the drz is the perfect begginers supermoto

Out of interest, how many similar bikes have you ridden to reach the conclusion that the DRZ is the perfect beginners supermoto?
