Okay, so I've got more an more knowledge, enough to get me through my theory (I have taken several mocks and past with like 31/35, 32/35 etc), been learning what I can ride and when, when to use L-plates and where to get good gear. Now, one last thing missing... A BIKE! I have got my eye on one of three bikes, it's going to be either:
A) Aprilia RS 125cc
Loads I can find, low millage (usually 5,000, no more than 10,000ish), and under £1,500.
B) Honda NSR 125cc
Not to many that I have seen, but the odd one is there, between 5,000 and 15,000 mileage, and from £1,000 - £1,800
C) Cagiva Mito 125cc
Only seen one or two of these bikes for sale, but they look the dogs. They also look like Ducati 916's a bit. Low mileage and roughly £1600 - £2250
Price isn't really an issue, but I want one of those three which is going to be reliable, good acceleration, and a nice top speed (70 would be fine as long it didn't have to struggle). So what would a nice balance of them be? Also, if you could be so kind to list pro's and con's.
Thanks, Darryl |

OR do your bike test and buy a proper bike, rather then what 17yr olds cane round on L plates anyway.
I followed the same train of thought as you at first, but came to realise they may very well explode on a regular basis, they get nicked shitloads, two strokes are ALWAYS dirty (they dont seem to burn the oil right so it pisses out the exhaust), they make a noise like a piss in a tin can etc etc.
And true they generate lots of power, but only for a 125, 33bhp in a 4 stroke is much better acceleration, due to the torque too. And there are several bikes around that are reasonably sporty and 33bhp. Or just "restrict" a nice 400 down.
Ps this used to be an nsr forum so they are a tad biased, i would say Mito personally, as they mod well, very fast (all the same tho), great handling and as long as you dont start it up near a serious biker they will think its a 'real' bike.

Having owned an RS125 (1999) I cant vouch for them as being good bikes. I have also riden a couple of NSR125's.
I have to say I prefer the RS125 seating position and also handling. The RS125 is said to be the best handling 125cc and can compare to the new bigger bikes also. The RS125 has a nice fat back tyre which in my opinion is a big Whats the point in having a sports rep with narrow bicycle tyres
If I were looking to get a 125cc now, I would buy a pre 1999 RS125 in chesterfield colours or the one in silver. Both are stunning looking rs125's and they are faster than the newer models.
The NSR125 is probably the most reliable, but it is also the lowest tuned. |

They all do the same thing, and the best thing I would suggest to someone in your situation would be to get a test ride on each of them, but make sure it's on one which is in your price range and the same year etc that you're looking at. Also get insurance quotes for all of them (make sure for getting quotes for comparision purposes that they're from the same company)
The Mito is the fastest of the lot, then the RS then then NSR, but there isn't much at all in it, and the more tuned ones (ie the Mito and the RS) will need more frequent work done on them and more rebuilds to the engine. All the other stuff between them is much the same like tyres, chain & sprockets, two stroke oil, brake pads and all the other consumables.
So basically, get a test ride on each one, get insurance quotes, then make your mind up from there . (With the insurance to get it cheapest use Danny's insurance service, he does the ringing around of all insurance places and if he comes back with a cheaper quote than you've found then it only costs you £30!) |

You would have to do your test to getting anything bigger than a 125.
I owned an RS125 and I loved it, handling was brilliant and I never had any problems with anything apart from the speedo drive going and a few weeks later the speedo cable snapped, only 2 problems I ever had with it! |
