Co-op worker mistakenly paid £1m

A supermarket employee who alerted bosses when he was mistakenly paid more than £1m has been rewarded with a crate of beer.

Stephen Foster, who works at the Co-op's distribution centre in Birtley, Gateshead, was alerted to the error on his December payslip by his girlfriend.

He had been paid £1.4m, or £800,000 after deductions.

The Co-op said it received the money back within 12 hours and praised Mr Foster's "exemplary behaviour".

Mr Foster, of Gateshead, is unable to speak about the incident because of restrictions in his contract.

A spokesman for the firm said: "Due to an error in our wages department earlier this month, Stephen Foster, an employee at our Birtley regional distribution centre, received a monthly salary payment of £1.4m.

"After deductions, around £800,000 was paid into his bank account.

"This was somewhat higher than he would normally expect but thanks to his honesty and that of his girlfriend, who first spotted the error, he immediately informed us of the mistake and the money was back with us within 12 hours of it being paid to him.

"We were surprised and concerned about our mistake but not by Stephen's exemplary behaviour, which is typical of him.

"Coming as it does just before Christmas, it's the kind of act that renews your faith in human nature."

What an idiot! Imagine displaying honesty and integrity in this day and age! Doesn't he realise that the only responsibility we each carry today is to stamp on someone's neck if it will advance you in the slightest.

If he had kept the money wouldn't that be depriving other members of the Co-operative?

Yup, £800,000 given back in honesty is rewarded with a £8 slab of beer; doubt that gave him a warm fuzzy feeling inside.

A lass I worked with was paid £1200 for two months (when she probaly earned £40 a week) and asked her bank, who said it wasn't thier error. She then asked HR who were adament it wasn't them either. After the third overpayment went in HR realised their mistake then demanded the money back, not nicely.
She got the square root of fuck all as thanks

Keeping the money for the interest would have been the best solution - that way no-one would have been deprived of anything and the guy would have got more than a shitty crate of beer.

Co-Op are taking the piss, one crate of beer? I imagine that the £1.4M wouldn't of affected other employees, it would of been taken out of their profits, which would go to opening new stores, maintenance and all that crap.

He should of left the money, bought a nice car or something decent and claim he thought he won the lottery without confirmation.

What does he expect for his honesty? A nice promotion? Running a Co-Op branch at around £40k - £60k a year, if he gets a promotion.

Why do the good things happen to bad people?

Hope he enjoys the single crate of beer, selfless cunt.

Honesty doesn't pay.

As a schoolboy me n rob found a wallet bursting with notes.
We did the right thing and handed it to the old bill, as we were in the station a fluster bloke enters...asks about a lost wallet cops ask fluster-bloke questions about contents.
Turns out it was his bosses money for plumbers parts.
Thanks us and leaves

2days later in a full assembly we are asked to stand up whilst our good deed was recounted. The cops phoned the head to commend him. The most embarrassing bit was the 50p reward..Each.

I found a purse full of money on a ferry on the way to France. I handed it into the coach driver who said he would contact the appropriate ferry people to return it. There was an I.D card inside with the name and address on. We got to France and boarded the coach and got to a cash and carry type place.

Went to the till to find the coach driver sharing the money from the purse between him and the trolley dollys from the coach. Yeah I understand its probablys a bad perk of the job but I found the money and had the honesty to try to sort it out.
