Travelling 70 miles tomorrow, into Norfolk, i postponed going today due to weather conditions, but it looks like i'll be in for worse road conditions tomorrow morning Rolling Eyes

I'm guessing it will be sheets of black ice, just hiding there, waiting for that gear change or brake to be applied...

My bar muffs cure what i hate most, freezing cold hands!

Anyone else riding tomorrow?

Got to do 45 miles home later. Then around 30 miles in total tomorrow. If the old relic survives that, it's MOT time Monday afternoon. The gritters haven't done much of a job - many places had ice patches this morning, even main roads.

I'd give it a miss mate, unless you have absolutely no other choice.

I'm not a fair weather rider and will ride in rain/cold/wind etc... but when you KNOW that the roads are icy as hell its just silly.

I got caught in it last night doing london > hastings, I left london at 9:30pm and got home at 2:30am... so a trip thats normally 1 hour 30.

That was in the car. ABS came on a lot with no feel, the car slid around a lot and wanted to go sideways, the wheels spun with VERY gentle throttle, infact just using clutch without was the only way to get the tyres to bite...

I was going in a straight line with my steering wheel turned 180 left at certain points.

If i'd done it on the bike I'd have had tons of slow speed spills and would have got home feeling rather fucked off.

If you can delay the trip or get a train, not worth trashing your bike (and potentially hurting yourself as well) for one trip.

I could call the whole thing off, but it's actually to see my girlfriend, haven't seen her in weeks and weeks, coming on months, and she'd be disappointed if i said no.

Maybe i need to man up, and learn that women need to understand a bikers needs Laughing

I'll see how it is, because travelling to college this morning wasn't that nice, but it was earlier in the morning, when roads hadn't seen masses of traffic, by tomorrow, especially the dual carriageway, i should think what ever lays on the ground will be churned up by all the traffic, and shouldn't be as bad.

I know what you mean about sliding though, i had a van pull out in front of me this morning, i was doing nearly 20mph, and i automatically applied both brakes, my rear wheel slid at about 45 degrees, then slid back in the opposite direction, i honestly thought that was going to be my first spill.

Been riding 9 months, and i use my bike every week, but luckily, i've never been in an accident, had a fall or come off my bike. Just been extremely close.

My bikes a crosser/enduro, and to be honest, if i was any other bike, i bet i would of come off when that van pulled out, just felt like i had more control, because of the bike. Obviously i don't have a clue, because i've never ridden a bigger bike. I saw a guy on his CG this morning too, he was travelling at 0.01mph and didn't look comfortable on the bike at all. (Slight exaggeration Laughing)

If you're crosser/enduro has offroad tyres then you have significantly less control than all bikes with normal road tyres.

My tyres aren't for offroad at all, they're just basic road tyres with chunky tread. In fact, i'm going to make myself look like a twat now Embarassed but they are actually the factory tyres, never changed from standard, been Shinko Nylon since mile 1.

I take back what i said, i must have less control than any other bike to be honest, check my avatar, you can slightly see the tread on my tyres.

or maybe in this instance you just need to control your man hormones and stop trying to prove how tough you are.....and get on a train.
The trains will be empty at the weekend anyway so you wont have to worry about sitting in a sweatbox with loads of stinky people.....and you`ll arrive safely at your girlfriends in a good state of mind,unstressed,...and ready to smash her pie in after a few shots of jack-d Wink

It's just not as exciting, it would be a boring trip, even if it is safer. I may be stupid, but possibly right, the bikers that chose to ride in poor weather conditions, they like the adrenaline rush and the activity of the brain, because your constantly concentrating and trying to avoid a spill. I felt good when i controlled my bike this morning, it put a smile on my face, i let it brush past me, and didn't let it dampen my confidence one bit Thumbs Up

*awaits flaming by safety nazis*

So true though.

You can look at it another light though, say you slide into a busy road on your ass causing a people carrier loaded with children and kittens to swerve and crash then how would you feel then?

I suppose it is not very likely but moreso than on a dry day.

Im going on my bike because

1. I enjoy riding
2. My penis automatically grows every time I ride it
3. I want to be there on time
4. It costs me £5 for every 100-120 miles I do.
5. Bike skating with feet down can be hilariously fun

I'd feel like they probably should have taken the train. If they'd just taken the train then there wouldn't have been a crash and they wouldn't all be dead, that makes it their own fault. Very Happy

I totally agree with you on all 5 of those points Thumbs Up

But maybe not 2..... Rolling Eyes

Bike skating was nerve wrecking this morning, but fun nonetheless Very Happy

I just think, overall, it's all about point 1. The fact i enjoy riding, it's the key to any biker wanting to ride his/her bike in whatever weather conditions. I've never enjoyed life so much until i put a playing card in my push bike's spokes, from that day onwards, i always wanted a motorbike, and now i have one, why not use it Mr. Green

If you ride a motorcycle with sheet ice on the roads then you are a crazy fool.

(I was tempted to put FACT at the end of that but then I remembered the BCF rules...)

The number 2 was a kind of play on words/euphamism/sarcasm, I am not sure which.

In reality yes it shrinks due to cold but the sense of awesomeness I feel is overpowering. Laughing Laughing

But in all seriousness yeh it is like one of those mini carrots you see in the supermarkets in the packs of stir fry veg with 2 raisins.

Rode on ice many times, come off on ice many times! I enjoy doing it to be honest but I would not recommend you follow my idiocy, my advice is to buy a newspaper and read about the weather on the train.
