Sorry, posting off phone so lack of grammar. Crashed my bike (gs500) today and it landed on the right hand side knocking a small hole in the engine cover, but there is no oil in that part. Started it and it ran, but the oil light stayed on. Got recovery back. So basically, gs there a likely reason? No oil was lost and it sounded normal for the few seconds I ran it.

Generally the light comes on when youve got no oil pressure, just in time to warn you that your engine has just eaten itself.

Might be on if youve knocked the wire off the sensor though, dont know were they are on the GS500 but look under the engine for a wire going to something removable, make sure the wire is attached properly.

Cheers
John

stinkwheel Well I just had my hands up a pigs fanny. Which makes your concerns pale into insignificance.

That's what I was just about to say. If it's had a knock then the oil in the engine has obviously moved and there simply might not have been much oil on the oil pressure sensor any more. After 60 seconds of research it's mentioned on the internet that typically after an oil change on that bike the oil pressure light will stay on initially for a few seconds before it realises all is well again anyway Thumbs Up

ms51ves3: why does it need 500 miles? Are you teaching it how to be a piston?

Cheers guys! Just went out again and fiddled with the oil pressure sensor (which was infact where the casing got holed) and it sorted it.
It could well have been exactly what you said alexio, but it had time to settle after the lift back and I tried it again after that, but I dunno. Cheers any how.
Think I lost my rational head after getting hit with the 'oh shit its the oil light' panic attack!

Hi

If like a 600 Bandit, then possibly the cover has pushed in and is shorting the oil pressure switch wiring to earth (this happened with Charlottes 600 Bandit).

All the best

Keith

I mean if the bike was on it's side oil would have been displaced to other parts of the engine. If it was tried to be turned on immediately after it might have had some weird immediate effects? I know I'm talking about in my head Razz
