The tropical tank I posted a thread about a while back is now thriving and doing well, with one rather notable exception. As I mentioned previously, we inherited this tank and 4 fish in it, one denison barb, two ghost catfish and Mr bloody Plec. This Plecostomus is 18" long and is 17 years old, the tank is only 39" long, we're pretty sure he's blind, given the speed with which he ploughs into the sides of the tank, if we put something in the tank, like the driftwood we bought recently, he moves it, buries it with stones and generally makes the tank look crap.

When we got the tank we re-stocked it with 6 Rosy Tetras, Four Blackskirt Tetras, Five Platy's (one died) and the barb and catfish are still there. The tank would look good with some plants etc but there's no point with that huge git in there.

I very much doubt any fish shop is going to take him, do I wait for natural causes or ... erm ... not Shocked

Cheers

Grim

I know our local aquarium style places have 'show fish' in the foyer when you go in, maybe give a few local ones a call and see if they would look after him for you.

Either that or stock up on batter mix and chips.

Shops might take him or you could try local farms, zoo's and aquariums. A farm took my aunts Terrapin when it grew too big Thumbs Up

If your local shop won't take it, advertise him on aquarist-classifieds - there are plenty of people who go after large fish.

Ours did that too, it's just something you get used to, ours died at 11yr old, id take it off your hands if you weren't soooooooo far away.

Annoying thing about them dying/leaving the box is they leave all algae to grow making the tank look dirty and derelict.

We'll get some more algae eaters once he's gone, just none that grow that blinking huge. He is a sailfin Plecostomus, just over 18" long and 17 years old, he should be on borrowed time but shows no sign of toddling off just yet. We inherited the tank with him in it but I am seriously considering finding a way to remove him, or a new home that has the space, although Plecs are passive, I still feel for him being confined in such a small space.

Cheers

ever picked one up? most solid fish known to man, tis a big boney bastard.

I remember when i was 4-5 my dad left our big 12" plec out in a bucket during winter, the entire bucket froze. Not very nice. try local garden and leisure places and see if they'll take him in as a showpiece, amazing to look at.

You could always ask your local petshop what they are willing to pay for such a big plec, remember with fish the bigger they are the more they are worth in general (as long as its healthy),

Even though plecs are tropical they can be kept outside in the summer months helping keep your pond kleen.

I wouldn't read to much into it running into the sides of the tank, plecs are bottom feeders so have eyes more for looking up than forwards tbh.

Alternativly you could see if caNsA_temporary would take it off your hands he has just got a 6 footer, If he is local that is.
