2nd Hand bandits/ fazers

I have recently been looking at various 2nd hand bandit 600's and fazers some of which are between 1k and 2k.

i just want to know if it would be wise to get a cheap 1000 pound bandit or will half of them be alot of maintenence seeing as they are around about 10 years old.

I paid 1350 for my 1999 bandit, the worst fault was the downpipes had been replaced/removed in the most terrible way ever, with some tiny pathetic bolts which had all siezed; and required a lot of wasted money on labour to get them off because 2 of them had to be drilled out.

The wiring is also a bit dodgy and I have problems with my indicators which must be fixed by jiggling wires.
Otherwise there's nothing to complain about really.

Depends a lot on how it has been treated.

Wiring seems to be generally not bad, although the covering over it around the head stock tends to break up. On Charlottes 600 (very early one) the brake light started to work intermitantly which turned out to be a broken wire just back from the broken up covering.

Engines are pretty solid (basically started life as a 750).

Oil coolers from Suzuki are silly money.

Rear calipers sieze up (and are common to loads of Suzukis).

They are pretty solid bikes and there are loads of spares around for them.

Agree about the rear caliper, when my rear brake pad wears down I plan on just leaving it.

ive a 99 bandit n600 streetfighter . in all a good solid bike . engine was the oil cooled motor lifted from the gsx600f . ive never had a real prob wit the bandit . you cant go far wrong wit a 600 bandit . mine is dynoed . i agree rear break caliper can seaze up . in all i will stick wit my bandit as it never let me down . and she is on the road hail or rain .

I love my bandit, highly reccomend, I did my DAS on a 98 bandit and was pretty solid and enjoyable.

I did my DAS in may, and I got my fazer 3 days later, I wanted something that would be fun but i didn't want to spend lots of money and then worry about dropping/binning it, plus it has to stand outside all year round,
I paid £950 and I got a 1998 (R) bike with 39,000 miles on the clock, 10 months tax and ticket, good chain and sprockets, no leaks, i.e. forks, engine, rad, no dents,
it has a couple of small scratches on the tank, hardly noticeable and some scratches to the fairing, some discolouration on the fork lowers mainly due to the previous owner using it to commute in all weathers.
I've done 5,000 miles since may and have just had a set of conti force fitted as the maxxis were getting near the mark,

I am very pleased with the fazer, it's not a "gleaming example" but then i ride in all weathers and i don't mind it getting wet, I hardly ever clean it (although i do clean and lube the chain regularly) it is great fun to ride and build my riding skills on, and it looks ok too, I could improve the look with some stripping and polishing...........but I'm too busy riding it

Mate of mine paid £925 for an S reg B6 about 18 months ago with 19k on the clock. Total mileage now 29k, total amount of problems = zero

ive had two hornets, a new one in 98 and just sold a 6000 mile italian built 03, stainless downpipes are poor grade stainless and still rot, handle well with input, brakes are so-so, tank range got better on the 03

also had 2 bandits, never liked either of them, soul-less mundane average machine's that do the job if thats all you want, downpipes rot as well

now own an 01 red white black fazer, 2800 miles, £1400, looks better, comfier, handles better than the others, R1 blue spot calipers (changed the rear for a fazer thou caliper) so brakes are better, and the tank range is excellent, will do 50 miles before the needle of the fuel gauge goes down to the F at the top, downpipes are still crap but using lots of ACF50 on them, and the fairing is very welcome

I bought my 1998 Bandit GSF 600 with 14,689 on the clock for just over a grand last summer (with no tax or MOT)

To this date what I've had done:

* 33bhp restriction kit fitted
* Front brake calipers cleaned and new seals fitted
* New chain and sproket
* New front brake lever and right foot peg (from when I met a hedge and then the road )
* New clip under the tank (not sure what this clip is called)

Needs a new exhaust, as the previous owner had a race can but replaced it with the standard one when it was sold to me - a bit shitty on a join, still ridable and passed mot... it just upsets me everytime I look at at! Apart from this, faultless *touches wood*

For my first 'big' bike it is doing me proud, as I'm still learning as I go - I'll get something faster and a bit more tarted up when there are a few more miles under my belt!

The build quality is better on a Fazer but I have heard the lights are really shit on the early ones.
