I took the cam and rockers out of the GN last night.

Took the whole caboodle down to the bike shop to ask for his expert opinion - his answer was "it's absolutely fucked out of its brain".

On the lookout for a new cam and rockers now. Parts seem pretty rare for this bike so I'm quite annoyed. Anyone know anything that might fit? Is there any way to fix it, regrinding or anything?

I like the festive pics Laughing

But yeh, I think the GS, GN and a few others use the same engine so should be easy to find.

DR and TU250 use the same engine but there doesn't seem to be many cams for them on ebay.

Sent a request to a few bike breakers but I'm not massively hopeful. The guy at the bike shop said he'd let me know if he finds anything.

Just wondering if there's anything to be done to save these ones. The engine runs but sounds like a fucked clock. Wondering if it would be possible to grind the cam and rocker arm surfaces to make them smooth again, but then I guess the valves wouldn't open fully...

Is it the cam facing itself (the bit that opens the valve) or the journal (the bit that runs in the head) that's gone?

At one point it was reasonably common to do a roller bearing conversion on that type of head (not sure if they did them on the GN or not). They'd turn down the ends of the cam and re-harden them so you could run it in a caged needle roller instead of directly on the head.

Might be an odd person out there who remembers how to do it.

It seems to be the cams themselves that have gone - they seem very 'scratched' if that makes any sense as do the rocker arms. I'll try and take some pictures later.

I did find it odd that one end of the shaft (the end closest to the camchain) seems to have a bearing of sorts, like a half-moon shaped thing that fits into a groove in the head, and the other end just runs metal-on-metal by the looks of things.

As I said, I'll get some more detailed photos later. Cheers Smile

You will probably find that it's cheaper to get an engine than just the camshaft and rockers. The rockers could prove very difficult to remove, they are on some bikes.

A scrap bike with a working engine won't cost much, and would be worth breaking for ebay and for a stock of spares. I need some early 80s Japanese indicators if you get one.

Piston Broke in Bristol did this for the centre plain (plane?) bearing on the head of my XBR500. That had rollers (or balls) either end but a plain bearing in the middle.

Ive heard of getting cams build up with weld and then remachined to restore shagged lobes (or a hotter profile).

Possibly an option but I'd go with a 2nd hand runner of an engine personally.

Looks tired to the max. You may be able to get if fixed by an engineering shop but the mechanic was right - new engine/head/bike is probably the best option.

Good news...managed to get a new head with cam and rockers, only 2000 miles and in great shape, delivered from the US for around 70 quid.

Should run perfectly with these in Very Happy
