This could be current affairs, geek zone or random so I put it in here.

Not sure what you all will make of this but China appears to be going ahead with its whitelisting plan of blocking every single foreign website until it has been officially passed and complies with Chinese law.
Is this another step in the Chinese totalitarian control with the rest of the world at risk.
Tbh, the Chinese aren't doing themselves any favours.

Its not as black and white as it sounds, in that project golden sheild doesn't work as advertised. The anti porn thing is old news anyway (note that porn possession and distribution in China is illegal)
Although at risk of sounding like an apologist, Stephen who lives in Hangzaho tells me in effect there are 3 tiers of internet,
One for the peasants, which is in effect a giant PRC intranet, a tier 2 which allows some outside access, and tier 3 which is virtually the same as it is everywhere else.
They cost progressively more about $75 for tier 3 for a month, Ste uses Tier 3 and can access anything he wants, few people can afford this bar expats though.
Tier 1 + 2 are terribly frustrating to use in that they have a cut off system in that if you try to access anything that is blacklisted it cuts you off for 15 seconds, you try it again it cuts you off for 30 seconds and so on. Things do appear on search engines though,
The thing is China is different, in that there was a deal struck in 1981 with Deng Xiao Ping to be rich is glorious. People see progress , people see their lives being improved and thus accept it.
Hutongs with no running water or toilets are being replaced by fancy apartment blocks, villages are getting sanitation etc.
Justice real justice is meeted out, ie the contaminated milk powder incident of 2008 the executives were executed, in the UK they would get a pilthy fine. A bank fraudster was also executed a few weeks ago, we have bank fraudsters enmasse and we give them more money!.
And thus they are generally willing to accept what we might consider totalitarian.
I had a debate with this with a guy in Beijing, I said but you can't vote, (they can at the regional level btw) they said so what? , what does voting ever do in England? , you change one set of scum for another. While the UK government seems to be doing the inverse making life less and less pleasant with all its new rules and regs.
Hence its an incomparable society. ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die. The goal isn't to live forever, the goal is to create something that will. In the end, your life will flash before your eyes. Make sure it is worth watching. |

Whitelisted = Approved.
Blacklisted = Denied.
I thought they had lifted all restrictions when I read the thread title . ____________________ Current: ZZR1400

The title has been edited, it was something like 'China whitelists everything on the internet', which to me would suggest total derestriction. ____________________ Current: ZZR1400
