Well, it's obviously getting near to christmas, and as yet, I'm not feeling the christmas 'spirit'.

Normally I just stick with a bourbon, usually Jim Beam, but want to diversify my tastes...obviously it's an expensive taster at £15 a bottle, so anyone got any reccommendations? I usually drink it with coke, but am happy to drink straight also...

I generally stick to Jack Daniel's with a dash of coke.

Although I did try some Black Grouse the other day which was quite nice, more earthy than Famous. Thumbs Up.

Indeed. If you're putting a soft drink in it, go for a cheap blend. The subtelties of a single malt will be totally wasted. The famous Grouse is one of the better blends but to go with coke, you won't notice (pretty common to drink it with a splash of lemonade up in whisky country though).

If you want to try a proper single malt, I'd suggest Highland park as a good one to try with a splash of water in. Not too challenging and readily available.

Tamdhu is a good, classic highland malt which is often very reasonably priced.

To mix with coke I drink Jack Daniels, Jim Beam or Black Label if I want to spend a bit more. I can't really reccommend anything straight though. I've heard very good things about Famous Grouse, and personally I like Southern Comfort but that's not really whiskey...

Hand Forget the coke + blend stuff. CO-OP are doing a 10 year old macallan for £18 FTW Thumbs Up
Try that, you wont be disappointed, add a splash of water if you want.

I recommend Johnnie Walker Black Label. Had it once on a night out and I don't remember anything else afterwards.

Generally I don't drink any whisky straight though. I normally drink Jack and coke or Bell's and coke. You could also try them with ginger ale, which Jame4son's is also good with.

If you're after just a taster rather than mixer, go for a single malt whisky...highly recommend as a taster by a guy I work with. Although he doesn't drink much, he does claim to have refined (label snobbery, anyone?) tastes.

Recently I've been drinking the stuff with a glass of water. I alternate both drinks, and it's like having the first taste every mouthful!

If you're drinking it properly, thy either Glenfarclas 105 (if you can find it - I wouldn't bother with the regular Glenfarclas), or Bruichladdich.

If you're after a bourbon to drink with/without coke, try Makers Mark. It plays the same game as Jack, only much, much better! Cool

I only ever drink whisky straight (not because I is well 'ard, but because I don't want to dilute the taste). Favourite by far is Laphroiag but that is only because the venues I go to in London don't generally have a great selection.

I need to join the whisky society. Sad

All the answers are assuming he means whisky, but says he drinks whiskey. It makes a big difference to the answer he needs.

I actually mentioned to the wife last night that I'd like to try a nice malt, I don't/didn't like whisky. They make Springbank just round the corner but I've never tried it.
My mother has a cupboard full of whisky, I'll maybe ask her to give me a taste of 1 or 2. Laughing

Have a look on this thread for information on whisky (and cigars).

https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=185258&highlight=whisky

If you are gonna mix with coke then for the love of god do not buy a single malt, get a decent blend, Johney Walker, Black & White, J&B etc. A decent Bourbon or American Whiskey such as Knob Creek, Buffalo Trace, Makers Mark are also fine to have with coke or straight.
If you want to use coke as a mixer then a drink I would highly suggest would be a nice Cuba Libre with Havana Club (Not the Bicaradi one) Anejo Especial, Coke, a splash of lime juice and a slice of lime to garnish Thumbs Up

If you want to drink a single malt or high end blend neat (straight) then I would look to bottles such as Highland Park, Lagavulin, Ardbeg, Talisker, Coal Ila, Bruichladdich for the big hitting peaty malts.
If you are after something softer and more approachable then any of the Speysides/Highland are gonna be winers. Cragganmore, Mortlach, Macallan, Glenfarclas will offer something a bit more on the fruity side.

I know I have said that single malts should be drunk neat but there are some that can benefit from a splash of spring water to dull the alcohol and release the full flavour of the whisky Thumbs Up

I am a Jim Beam Black kind of guy. Once tried a bottle of "expensive" bourbon which I believe was Knob Creek and was only mildly impressed. Not worth the uppage in price (was 25 quid up from 15 for JB).

This one looks kinda nice:

That site advertises this stuff as pretty spectacular for some reason too:

No, I'm not affiliated or anything.

It's a nice little malt Oban. I went on the distillery tour about a year ago. Really interesting seeing up close how the whisky is made. Plus the smells inside are mouthwatering.

+1 for Habana Club with Coke. Get at least the 5 year one, preferrably the 7 year. Much smoother to the taste and definitely worth the extra money.
+1 also for Jack Daniels with ginger ale. Delish Thumbs Up

Aye, I first came across it at my brothers pub, it's a real ale pub but he has about 10 proper (read expensive) whiskys in addition to the usual optics in any pub. IIRC, Tallisker (sp) ain't too bad either.

I'm more of a vodka man myself though.
