Cross posted from another forum.

Government motorcycle safety film from the 60's.

Newer riders may notice the almost total lack of road markings and parked cars at the side of the road. Also the riding of 250cc bikes on L-plates while wearing stout brogues and gauntlets.

Also the ability of a 250cc matchless to pull away without the use of the throttle.

Funny how things change. Ride like Tom on your test these days and you'll fail.

Some things don't change though. Still nowhere to put an L-plate on the front of a bike and wee chavs still ride like idiots round housing estates (although probably don't have a job like Toms friend).

i think he did use a bit (he'd probably have to, to start it) but with the non return throttle, taking hands off doesn't mean the engine dies.

Want to live where the roads are like that. Want a 250 matchless.

I like the way she's riding a girls bike too! Smile

I remember taking my cycling proficiency test in the late 70s...and we were embarrassed to do hand signals like that even then, as nine year olds on pushbikes. You would never be able to show your face in public again if you started waving your arms about every time you went to slow down Laughing

No indicators, no mirrors, no brake light, non-returning throttle, no road markings and riding virtually on the pavement...and all that pretty much sums up how uncluttered the roads were back then because you'd been dead in about ten minutes in modern traffic.

If she hasn't set foot on the crossing, you don't have to stop.

i still do hand signals (if there is anything behind me on the dommie), it has a mirror but it shakes so much you can't see bugger all and normally they have a back brake light (which is tended to be used as the front is always crap)

and it's still the bike i'm most likely to lose my license on Laughing

I wonder why they are encouraged to take a position far to the left, rather than dominating the lane as one is taught nowadays. It seems the bikes have plenty of power to keep up with traffic.

They are probably about as fast as a CG125.

If she hasn't set foot on the crossing, you don't have to stop.

If she is waiting to cross, then you should give precedence. no need for her to step out into the road to make you stop.

Hand signals still have their place on the odd occasion.

When slowing down to turn right with a car up one's jacksie, the addition of a right arm being extended can make the car slam his anchors on.

When exiting a roundabout and a car looks like it's going to pull out in front of you, a brief handsignal stands out and makes them take notice.

edit, just watched the film, he comes out of the paper shop and does something that would get you marked down on your test. He cocked his leg over the bike without checking he traffic to make sure he wasn't sticking it into the path of a vehicle.

Highway code rule 19:
Quote:
19

Zebra crossings. Give traffic plenty of time to see you and to stop before you start to cross. Vehicles will need more time when the road is slippery. Wait until traffic has stopped from both directions or the road is clear before crossing. Remember that traffic does not have to stop until someone has moved onto the crossing. Keep looking both ways, and listening, in case a driver or rider has not seen you and attempts to overtake a vehicle that has stopped.

Or more legally.
THE ZEBRA, PELICAN AND PUFFIN PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS REGULATIONS 1997 wrote:
PART 1, SECTION 25, PARA 1.

25. - (1) Every pedestrian, if he is on the carriageway within the limits of a Zebra crossing, which is not for the time being controlled by a constable in uniform or traffic warden, before any part of a vehicle has entered those limits, shall have precedence within those limits over that vehicle and the driver of the vehicle shall accord such precedence to any such pedestrian.

So, pedestrians have right of way on a zebra crossing only if they are on the crossing before the car gets there.

Which do you you want, the pedestrian doing the Hokey Cokey at the side of the road, or you being sensible and if it is obvious that a pedestrian is waiting at the side of the road at the crossing giving them precedence?

One you rely on the pedestrian not jumping out in front of you, the other, you control the situation and the safe movement of the pedestrian.
Obviously common sense does play it's part.

Left of centre in your lane is the correct position for normal riding,

Riding dead centre is seen as poor lane disipline and will earn you minor points during a test ,

No. I want the pedestrian to pay attention to the traffic and wait for a point where it wouldn't cause any traffic to have to perform an abrupt manouver before they start to cross. ie. wait for a halfway sensible gap and begin to cross, the traffic has to give way but not stop suddenly.

That is how they work in the UK, you don't have right of way until you start to cross so don't start to cross if you are unsure oncoming vehicles can safely stop. Both parties share responsability, cars give way to crossing pedestrians, pedestrians give way to traffic already on the crossing.

Giving pedestrians on the pavement who look like they might want to cross right of way is what they have in Germany. It removes any responsability on the pedestrians part to check it is safe to cross. Hit someone on a Zebra crossing in Germany and it is automatically the car drivers fault.

This almost certainly results in more accidents involving: a) arrogant German pedestrians who just step out without looking and b) Worried car drivers who perform an emergency stop anytime someone looks sideways at a pedestrian crossing so as to avoid a fine, only to have someone run into the back of them.

Seen both happen.

If a pretty girl wants to cross you stop before she gets on the crossing and smile.
