Jubilee clip tolerances

Anyone got any idea roughly what temperature jubilee clips melt at (assuming a standard one off the shelf at halfords or simmilar)

Second, how hot does it get inside the valve cover where all the tappets are.

1300c - 1400c according to the tye of steel they are made out of.

I'm assuming they will be made out of a mild steel, generally galvanised with zinc. So Ichy's 1300-1400c will be round about right.

Although they will start to deform at only a few hundred deg, along with changes to their molecular structure.

As for how hot it will get, i can't imagine it will get any hotter than the cylinder block, probably considerabley cooler. I'm guessing at maybe around 50-60 deg where as the rest of your engine (ie cyl block) will probably get to around 80.

May we ask why?

His camchain broke so he's going to make a daisy chain of jubilee clips. Inside the valve cover doesn't get that hot, the oil doesn't burn so a steel clip isn't going to.

Not the cam chain :/

One of the cam journals split so the valve cover doesn't bolt down tightly enough and I'm losing oil so my theory is that it will hold the split thread closed so the bolt can get into it and hold it tight enough.

Will have to do until I can get hold of a new head/get the journals repaired.

The valve cover will have no effect on compression.

So you have an oil leak?

Just to keep the pedants happy, understand that this answer has risks.

How about putting some liquid gasket around the mating face before fitting the valve cover? Does the journal have any room to fit a longer bolt?
